Mendenhall Postdoctoral Research Fellowship - Research Opportunity #: 20-8. Geomorphic and social influences on coastal resilience to climate change.
From a geomorphic perspective, the resilience of coastal systems is a function of sediment availability and flux, or how much sediment is available in a coastal system (McBride et al., 2013) and how quickly sediment can be redistributed within it to allow coastal landforms to adapt to changing climate (Lorenzo-Trueba and Ashton, 2014; Ciarletta et al., 2021). In many places, the timing and nature of changes will be influenced significantly by imbalances in sediment flux due to the relative contributions of cross-shore (e.g., overwash, breaching) and alongshore sediment transport processes (e.g., changes in wave climate) suggesting that geomorphologic state changes of coastal systems due to climate change (e.g., prograding à stable; stable à erosional; erosional à drowning) will not happen uniformly or linearly along the Nation's coasts. Though the drowning of coastal landforms is the long-term result of deficiencies in sediment supply and/or rapid changes in climate (Lorenzo-Trueba and Ashton, 2014; Moore et al., 2014), it is not an instantaneous response, and coasts may cease to provide economic and ecosystem services long before drowning occurs (Miselis and Lorenzo-Trueba, 2017). Further complicating prediction of future changes is that coastal resilience depends on more than just natural processes. Because humans have altered and will continue to alter coasts (Miselis et al., 2021), socio-economic factors, such as individual and community knowledge and wealth, influence the ability of coastal communities to adapt to changing climate (McNamara et al., 2011; Jin et al., 2021; Kolodin et al., in press). This suggests that the ability to adapt will be spatially-variable, possibly corresponding with the greatest knowledge, interest, and/or wealth rather than the greatest need.
Proposed Duty Station: Saint Petersburg, Florida
Areas of Ph.D: Geology, oceanography, geography, coastal processes or related fields (candidates holding a Ph.D. in other disciplines but with knowledge and skills relevant to the Research Opportunity may be considered).
Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following qualifications: Research Geologist, Research Oceanographer, Research Geographer, Research Physical Scientist, Research Mathematician.
(This type of research is performed by those who have backgrounds for the occupations stated above. However, other titles may be applicable depending on the applicant's background, education, and research proposal. The final classification of the position will be made by the Human Resources Specialist.)
Physical/Environmental Demands:
It is anticipated that work will be usually performed in an office setting. The work normally involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of offices or meeting and training rooms. Though not required of the position, if fieldwork is proposed, exposure to moderate risks might be possible, such as: fieldwork that includes some physical exertion such as walking over wet, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces and bending, crouching, stooping stretching, reaching, or similar activities; adverse weather conditions, such as high winds and low/high temperatures; travel in safety-approved small air and water craft and off-road vehicles; poisonous insects, plants, or snakes. Fieldwork requires special safety precautions and/or protective clothing and equipment.

General Information
The Mendenhall Research Fellowship Program provides an opportunity for postdoctoral fellows to conduct concentrated research in association with USGS scientists, often as a final element to their formal career preparation. The Program also provides: 1) research experiences that enhance the scientific stature and credentials of the Fellows; and 2) scientific expertise to assist in the implementation of the USGS Strategic Plan and the science strategy of its programs. Mendenhall Fellows are expected to publish their results in peer-reviewed scientific outlets.
Eligibility Requirements
In order to be considered for these opportunities, candidates must:
(1) have successfully completed a Ph.D. in a field related to the described Research Opportunity no earlier than October 8, 2016 (5 years before the announcement opening date); OR
(2) if close to completion, have all Ph.D. requirements completed and must submit proof of completion prior to receiving an official start date;
(3) meet the qualification requirements described in the Research Opportunity. The research proposal submitted must demonstrate that the applicant is equipped with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties for the specific Research Opportunity.
Start Date and Completion of PhD:
It is anticipated that this position will start no later than March 2023. The person selected must have all PhD requirements completed and MUST submit proof of completion prior to receiving an official start date. Exceptions may be made for a later start date on a case-by-case basis.
