    The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is seeking a highly motivated and qualified candidate for an exciting full-time permanent position with its Office of Energy Projects. The position is in the San Francisco Regional Office, and the incumbent will serve as an Engineer in the Commission’s Dam Safety and Inspections program. The San Francisco Regional Office is responsible for dam safety oversight and inspections of hydropower projects in the Southwestern United States. In this position, the Engineer will conduct dam safety and construction inspections, and review investigations, analyses, evaluations of complex dam safety issues, and plans and specifications for construction projects.

    The ideal candidate will have good verbal and written communication skills. The candidate will have experience in independently applying one or more of the following civil engineering disciplines: structural, hydrologic, hydraulic, geotechnical, and/or geological engineering. The candidate should have considerable experience and knowledge in the investigation, design, construction, operation, inspection, and maintenance of dams and hydroelectric power facilities. The candidate will make field assessments of the safety and adequacy of dams and appurtenant structures and will be productive in helping to accomplish the mission, goals, and objectives of the Commission’s Dam Safety and Inspections program.

    The mission of the Office of Energy Projects is to facilitate potential benefits to the nation through the review of natural gas and hydropower infrastructure proposals and minimize risks to the public associated with FERC jurisdictional energy infrastructure.     Major duties include: 

    • Conducts inspections of licensed hydroelectric projects having highly difficult, complex, and/or controversial features.
    • Prepares engineering reports to establish and document the dam safety, public safety, and environmental and license compliance of the hydroelectric project.
    • Evaluates the adequacy of design, constructability, and compliance with current engineering criteria and practices.
