Student accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree in a qualifying educational institution a full or half time basis as defined by the institution.
The student in this position will be a part of Mission Support Services, working with professionals from various disciplines such as engineering, computer science, mathematics, etc. Mission Support Services is responsible for assisting in the research and development of software useful for establishing and maintaining the efficient, productive, and cost-effective operation of the National Airspace System (NAS). The goal is for the student trainee to become familiar with programs, projects and functions of the organization.
As a trainee, he/she performs a mixture of routine and somewhat complex engineering tasks under the general direction of a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or other more experienced employee. Assists manager and other employees in day-to-day operations, which includes assisting and supporting the following: developing test outlines, approaches and procedures used for documenting test cases and collecting data; developing and modifying code; providing comments for engineering designs and reviews; providing technical support activities for site support, coding, configuring and implementing server web-based software and tools to automate and provide metrics data; investigating and implementing solutions to system, network and process issues; answering help desk calls; identifying, assessing and communicating software changes; developing and executing system outreach activities; migrating users from one system to another; leveraging academic models and creative prospective to suggest ideas and approaches for manager's consideration and communicating information through technical reports, notes, telecons, and briefings.
Trainees are fully immersed in teams working on mission-critical projects while also engaging in meaningful learning and development opportunities. The position offers applied experience, exposure to leaders within mission support, as well as exposure to networking opportunities and professional skills development. Receives detailed instructions from a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced employee.
Contacts are primarily internal to one organizational unit, with a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced employee to share basic information and to receive guidance. In some areas, may have limited contacts with external customers.
Established policies procedures provide detailed guidance for almost all assignments with little or no room for discretion. Regularly refers problems and work issues to a manager, program/project manager, team leader or more experienced employee. Work is reviewed regularly during assignments and at completion to ensure timeliness and all aspects of quality. Work activities typically support the work of other employees and contribute to the activities of the organizational unit.

Degree: To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor’s degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of these seven areas of engineering science or physics:(a) statics, dynamics;(b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.
To qualify for this position, you must be enrolled in an accredited college or university in a program leading to a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science; OR pursuing a bachelor's degree or higher which includes 30 semester hours in a combination of computer science, mathematics, and statistics. To be acceptable, at least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus.
