As a Research Physical Scientist, you will perform the following duties:
- Direct Earth system research. Conduct theoretical and experimental research to understand the physical, chemical, and/or biological processes of the Earth system in its past, present, and future states. Lead research in Earth system predictability through development and analysis of global and regional climate and earth system models. Provide scientific and technical guidance that shapes National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) wide strategies for applying climate and earth system predictions to NOAA’s mission goals.
- Lead the development and analysis of climate and Earth system models. Lead research through global and regional earth system modeling across ocean, atmospheric and terrestrial/hydrologic systems. Direct the execution and optimization of large scale geophysical fluid dynamics simulations on High Performance Computing architectures. Contribute to development of global and regional Earth system modeling frameworks, including through integration of new algorithms and capabilities. Develop analysis and/or diagnostic toolboxes.
- Oversee research stakeholder engagements and collaborations. Lead collaborations across disciplinary boundaries to advance Earth system science to meet NOAA’s mission objectives. Engage with climate impacts researchers and managers to develop actionable information for climate-informed decisions. Publish research in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Attend and, when needed to support strategic goals, organize meetings and conferences to present results and synthesize efforts.
These duties are described at the full performance level of the ZP-4; the ZP-3 is developmental leading to such performance.
Occasional travel - Up to 10% of domestic travel may be required for this position.
