The Office of Research and Development’s (ORD) Center for Computational Toxicology and Exposure is a scientific organization responsible for carrying out EPA's mission to support public health and environmental decisions by providing solutions-driven research to rapidly evaluate the potential human health and environmental risk associated with exposures to environmental stressors and ensure the integrity of the freshwater environment and its capacity to support human well-being. The Biomolecular and Computational Toxicology Division (BCTD) expands and refines the development and use of new approach methods for evaluating chemicals for health effects. BCTD develops and uses high-throughput assays, complex cell culture systems, alternative species models and computational and informatics approaches to transform the components of chemical risk assessment with a focus on human health. BCTD research aims to broaden the acceptance and implementation of these new approaches in support of regulatory decisions.
Specific duties include:
The Ethics in Government Act, P.L. 95-521 requires the applicant selected for this position to submit a financial disclosure statement, OGE-278, prior to assuming the Title 42 position, annually, and upon termination of employment.
This position is designated as High Risk and requires a background investigation. Unless an appropriate background investigation is already on record with the Office of Personnel Management, you must undergo a background investigation.
To meet the eligibility criteria, you must have a doctoral degree in toxicology, environmental health, pharmacology, or other scientific discipline related to the Biomolecular and Computational Toxicology Division's mission and substantive specialized experience in a type of work or a combination of functions directly related to this position. You should be recognized as a significant scientific contributor, advisor, and consultant in one or more area’s related to the design, development, and interpretation of in vitro high- and medium- throughput toxicity assays; the design, development, evaluation and application of computational modeling and bioinformatic methods and familiarity with their use in analyzing data from in vitro toxicity assays, toxicokinetics, chemistry, transcriptomics, genomics, and metabolomics; the design, methods development and analysis of assays using complex cell cultures and alternative species to predict the tissue, organ, and organism-level effects of chemicals; chemical risk assessment; and application of in vitro and computational models as New Approach Methods in evaluating potential chemical risks. As evidence of your qualifications and scientific contribution, you may also have: 1) been regularly sought out for consultation on difficult problems in the field of expertise; 2) served in leadership roles on task forces/committees; 3) received prestigious awards for research accomplishments; and 4) demonstrated experience building coalitions and relationships with partners and customers to address the strategic planning of the Center’s research in the context of toxicology research and modeling.
You must have a doctoral degree in a scientific discipline related to CCTE's mission to qualify for this position.
Your academic record must demonstrate a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in one of the following:
Biology: You must have a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in one of the following: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position; OR a combination of education and experience with courses equivalent to a major, as listed.
Toxicology: You must have a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in toxicology, or an appropriate discipline of the biological, medical, or veterinary sciences that included at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, biochemistry, or physiology, and 12 semester hours in toxicology.
Health Science: You must have a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in the following: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences related to the work of this position.

The salary may be up to $250,000 per year, however, this is dependent upon qualifications, experience and other factors (e.g. current salary and/or current market rates).
This position has portable work. If selected for this position, you may be authorized to telework after meeting eligibility requirements if approved by the supervisor/manager. Telework is available based on agency policy. NOTE: The agency is currently utilizing maximum telework flexibilities due to COVID. Once normal operations resume, you will be required to report to the location stated in this announcement.
