Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. Park Guide Duties at all locations:
- Staff information counter in a visitor center.
- Answering questions on a variety of subjects.
- Orient hikers to conditions and equipment needs.
- Interpret park values for visitors with varying interests and backgrounds.
- Performs duties including programs that contain live demonstrations and/or audio-visual devices.
- Performs duties including programs that require application of broad subject-matter knowledge of the park.
- Guide large groups (up to 50 people) on longer walks or programs.
- Provide a wide range of services to park visitors.
- Orient and explain current park events and warn of safety hazards.
- Opening and closing of facilities.
Other duties include roving interpretation in the cavern and on the surface, providing orientations to visitors at elevators and the Natural Entrance before entering the cavern. Collateral duties and special projects such as developing temporary exhibits will be assigned. When needed, provides first aid to visitors and assists with medical emergencies or carry-outs. Cleaning bio-hazardous materials such as human waste and other bodily fluids off of trails may be required. The Hepatitis B shot series will be offered.
Specific to El Malpais: You will assist in and will provide services which include, but are not limited to: issuing cave permits, and assisting with handling cooperating association sales of items on a daily basis. Roving patrols will be conducted at a variety of park areas (1-3+ miles). Trailheads are accessed via paved and primitive dirt roads. Roving trails involves hiking over rugged lava terrain. Roving in park caves involves climbing over jagged lava rocks and crawling through tight spaces. You will complete and submit trail patrol information and assist higher graded employees with collecting and recording other information such as weather, visitor use statistics, and other data as assigned. You will perform other intermittent duties such as minor trash pickup and trail maintenance as assigned.
Specific to El Morro: You will assist with handling cooperating association sales of books, posters, postcards, etc., on a daily basis. Foot patrols will be conducted on park trails (up to 3 miles) and through the campground area. You will complete and submit trail patrol information and assist higher graded employees with collecting and recording other information such as weather, daily campground and visitor use statistics, and other data as assigned. Incumbent will perform other intermittent duties such as minor trash pickup and trail maintenance as assigned. You will assist in developing temporary exhibits using Adobe InDesign software. Incumbent will write social media posts.
Occasional travel - You may be expected to travel for this position.
