    Responsibilities

    The duties of this position include providing, under periodic supervision, technical assistance, interpretations, guidance, and training to weights and measures officials and industry representatives regarding:  (1) NIST Handbook 44 specifications, tolerances, and other technical requirements for weighing and measuring devices and select OIML recommendations; (2) NCWM Publication 14 weighing and or measuring device procedures and test criteria; (3) test procedures included in NIST Examination Procedure Outlines (EPOs); (4) NIST field manuals and other technical guidance documents, including those related to weights and measures practices and interpretations of NIST standard and test procedures; and (5) relevant model laws and regulations in NIST Handbook 130, with emphasis on commercial weighing and measuring devices and associated practices.  Duties also include developing, under close supervision, U.S. positions on OIML documents and issues based on comments from U.S. industry and the weights and measures community; communicating those positions to the international community; and managing U.S. representation to and participation in select technical committees.  Additionally, the successful candidate will, under supervision, conduct studies and collect information from appropriate sources to analyze the technical merit, market impact, and cost/benefit of a wide variety of weights and measures issues related to national and international weights and measures standards, test procedures, and practices referenced above in order to provide guidance and leadership to technical committees and working groups.  Duties also include, under periodic supervision, participating in the development and updating of training material; developing and delivering formal talks and presentations; writing technical articles, field manuals, papers, and guidance documents on weights and measures issues; working with media representatives to promote and educate the general community on legal metrology issues; reviewing draft documents written by others; and preparing meeting agendas and reports.  The successful candidate will assist in coordinating the development and resolution for weights and measures issues with U.S. industry representatives and weights and measures officials; and serve as technical advisors and/or chair at technical meetings, with a focus on achieving consensus positions which will serve the best interests of the national and international weights and measures system.

    Occasional travel - 4 regional weights and measures meetings per year, 2 national weights and measures meetings per year, 1 NTEP meeting per year, 2 off-site training classes per year
