    The Alaska Region contains twenty three national park units and two affiliated areas, comprised of 54 million acres which represents 65% of all National Park Lands; is home to the largest single National Park (Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve; and hosts the highest mountain peak in North America (Mount McKinley); has 33.7 million acres, which represents more than 75% of the National Park Services' congressionally authorized Wilderness acres in the Alaska Region, as well as approximately 2.4 million visitors annually. The selectee will be responsible for the following: 1) managing programs involving the maintenance of standards in regard to engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, history, archeology, forestry and natural and cultural resources; 2) managing a broad spectrum of partnership programs; 3) ensuring best practices in business management to protect park resources and provide visitor and community services; 4) directing, identifying and correcting visitor and job safety; 5) directing park operations related to administration, including human resource management and equal opportunity; 6) managing full time and part time staff at regional headquarters and in the field, and 7) providing leadership in NPS civic initiatives in order to promote public involvement and dialogue in key planning, interpretation, education and preservation issues.
