There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
One position will be located within the Maintenance Division in Yellowstone National Park. Elevation at Mammoth is 6,200 feet. Temperatures vary from an average of 70 degrees Fahrenheit in summer to sub-zero at times in winter. A school is available, with kindergarten through 12, in Gardiner, Montana, five miles north of headquarters. Free bus transportation is provided for school children between Mammoth and Gardiner. Many community facilities such as stores, a drugstore, day care, motels, and restaurants are available in Gardiner. A medical clinic is available in Mammoth. All other services are available within 55 to 75 miles from Mammoth. Housing is not available for this position. Housing may be available through the Yellowstone National Park bid process.
One position will be located at the West Entrance in West Yellowstone, Montana located 49 miles south of park headquarters. Elevation at West Yellowstone is 6,667 feet. Temperatures vary from an average of 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer to sub-zero in the winter. Temperatures of -20 degree Fahrenheit are not uncommon in winter. Most park roads are not plowed after the first weekend in November, and interior locations are only accessible by over-snow vehicles November through April. The West Yellowstone area provides many community services (medical services, grocery shopping, banking, entertainment, UPS, etc.) Schools are available in West Yellowstone.
One position will be located at Old Faithful. Park interior roads are not plowed after Thanksgiving and interior duty stations are typically only reachable by snowmobile November through April. Medical services, grocery shopping, banking, entertainment, UPS, and other delivery services are NOT available in the winter in the interior of the park. The US Mail is delivered twice a week or less in the winter. Although this isolation is acceptable to some employees, many soon find it a hardship for themselves and their families. Reassignment to another less isolated location is not an option. We strongly suggest you thoroughly investigate the winter lifestyle characteristics in Yellowstone National Park interior sites.
Physical Demands: Moderate physical effort is required in operating equipment and shoveling snow in the winter. Employee must be able to ride tractor equipment for up to 8-10 hours/day. Must have physical ability to bend, crouch, lift and stand for extended periods of time while performing grounds and equipment maintenance-type work. Must be able to lift 50 LBS.
