    The Cincinnati, OH VA Medical Center is recruiting to fill a vacancy located in the Cardiology section of Medical Service. This one vacancy will be filled with either a Physician Assistant or a Nurse Practitioner.

    Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, Day shift- Weekends/Holidays/Off-Tours as needed by the Service.

    The Cardiology Stress Lab Physician Assistant will perform a variety of clinical duties within the Cardiology Section including seeing new and follow-up patients in clinic, admitting/discharging pre- and post-procedure patients, participating in the non-invasive procedure labs, and cross-covering the other cardiology mid-levels as needed. The Stress Lab Physician Assistant is responsible for performing all duties associated with the Stress Lab as outlined below.

    Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

    • Provides medical services to patients
    • Collects and document data
    • Orders and schedule laboratory studies, radiology studies, invasive and non-invasive cardiac studies and professional consultations
    • Provides direct patient care services to both outpatients and inpatients.
    • Provides the clinical review for consultations to the Cardiology Section and triages them to the appropriate Cardiology Clinic or addresses the question via an E-Consult.
    • Provides the daily clinical management of all patients referred for stress tests. This duty includes assessing the patient for appropriateness for the requested test, ordering test medications, obtaining informed consent, supervising/performing the test, evaluating the patient for discharge, reviewing the preliminary results, providing a preliminary interpretation of the ECG tracings for chemical stress tests, developing a management plan for patients with abnormal tests and communicating with the appropriate provider (e.g., Cardiology fellow, Cardiology attending, referring provider) once a plan is developed.
    • Cross cover for the other mid-level providers in the Cardiology Section, which may include admitting and discharging patients post-procedure.
    • Performs pre-procedure evaluations and education and orders and reviews appropriate lab studies.
    • Works with Primary Care Providers, other clinical services, e.g., Surgery and Anesthesia, as well as, providers from other VA facilities that refer patients for cardiac procedures to coordinate care and ensure test results are acted on appropriately.
    • Perform other duties as assigned

    The Cardiology PA also sees new and follow up patients in the General Cardiology Clinic and will function as the primary Cardiology provider for a panel of patients. They will see other General Cardiology clinic patients in follow-up who cannot be seen in a timely fashion by their usual Cardiology provider, including those needing a quick follow-up after discharge from the hospital. They will work directly with various VA and non-VA facilities to coordinate evaluation, management and follow up for patients by:
    • Provides daily clinical management of all patient referred for stress tests.
    • Assists with triage of stress test referrals.
    • Conducts an outpatient clinic to see patients with abnormal stress tests.
    • Evaluates routine outpatient consults and provide continuity of care for Cardiology patients.
    • Evaluates selected inpatient consults and participate in inpatient rounds.
    • Develops and implement treatment plans for Cardiology patients in the inpatient and outpatient setting.
    • Assists with triaging outpatient Cardiology consults into the appropriate clinic or procedure lab.
    • Refills prescriptions for Cardiology patients.
    • Assists with triaging phone calls requiring a level of care above that of the clinic nurse.
    • Assists with the management of Cardiology Clinic patients to ensure treatment goals are met.
    • Orders and reviews results for appropriate laboratory, radiologic, and other diagnostic tests.
    • Reviews and signs cardiac rehab treatment plans and progress notes.
    • Assists clinic nurses with patient education.
    • Assists with addressing PATS-R issues as a member of the Cardiology Patient Advocate Group
    • Assists with a variety of administrative matters that require clinician review including closing open clinical encounters and assisting with consult review management.
    • Assists with performing histories and physical examinations on patients scheduled to undergo various cardiac procedures (including cardiac catheterization, percutaneous coronary or peripheral vascular intervention, and electrophysiology procedures).
    • Assists with admitting and discharging routine patients who have undergone the above cardiac procedures. These duties will include writing admission/discharge orders, writing progress notes, writing discharge prescriptions, and dictating discharge summaries.
    • Assists with admitting and discharging patients requiring admission prior to cardiac procedures (e.g., hydration prior to cardiac catheterization, heparin bridging, etc).

    Day-to-day direction will be provided by a staff cardiologist physician including general cardiologists, interventional cardiologists and electrophysiologists.
