This position is for the Cardiology Section Chief, Tier 2, located within Medicine Service Line at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital.
The Cardiology Section Chief oversees the day to day clinical operations of the cardiac cath lab, the cardiology clinics, inpatient consults, cardiology patient care in the ICU, echocardiology services, pacemaker and EP services, EKG services and general cardiology administration. The position involves overseeing the administrative functions of the Section, overseeing the residents and fellows on the cardiology services, evaluating and implementing new technologies as related to cardiology, and overseeing the quality improvement program. The Section Chief plays an integral role in addressing any deficiencies, identifying areas of improvement and implementing corrective actions or procedures.
In addition to the administrative duties, the Section Chief performs clinical functions, including evaluating patients with subtle or overlapping symptoms and patients presenting with complex diagnoses. Facilitating patient access to continuing medical care by appropriate referrals to other healthcare providers. Diagnosing, treating, and managing patients with cardiovascular diseases according to acceptable methods and techniques. Overseeing the care of cardiology patients by nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and technologists. Performing chart reviews and coordinating with hospitalists regarding patient care issues. Responsible for documenting patient care data in electronic medical records, such as: history and physical exams, daily progress notes for inpatients, encounters for outpatients, consult notes and entering both new and renewal prescriptions. Recommending improvement of work methods, organizational features, and restructuring of positions to support the cardiology services and quality patient care.
The Cardiology Section Chief will direct the patient care within the Section, ensure appropriate coverage for patients, and provide specific guidelines and expectations for physician, physician assistant and nurse practitioner performance. He/she will monitor staff and ensure that all paperwork, education and training of providers are being met. He/she will assist with future recruitment, report to the leadership of the Medicine Service Line (MSL) and provide clinical care and planning in an interdisciplinary approach in collaboration with the Chief and Associate Chiefs of the MSL and other health care professionals. He/she will always maintain current BLS Basic Life Support and ACLS certification. Will maintain good relationship with Nursing and other services necessary for the smooth functioning of the Cardiology Section.
The Cardiology Section Chief will be actively involved in research or, at the minimum, will foster environment in the Section that will be inspiring for other members of the Section to pursue research. The Section Chief will establish collaborative relationship with the leaders of the Division of Cardiology and the Department of Medicine at the primary academic affiliate.
Completes Focused and Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluations for providers. Completes required proficiencies in a timely manner.
Monitors and observes Cardiology provider activities such as encounter completion, progress note completion, consult utilization patterns, eRouter completion, clinical reminder completion, procedure performance and complications, etc.
Ensures accurate documentation and coding of service rendered by the providers.
Assigns collaborating physicians and monitors mid-level providers as needed.
Participates in activation of new clinical initiatives related to Cardiology.
Ensures appropriate assignment/schedules of provider clinic hours to meet the needs of the patients. Coordinates coverage for leave as required.
Participates in committee attendance and accepts committee work as needed.
Serves as a mentor to advance the careers of more Junior Staff.
Works collaboratively with partners in research on studies and projects involving staff or patients. Supports providers who are actively pursuing research activities.
Maintains patient records and files. Follows HIPAA guidelines regarding patient information.
Ensures timely completion of daily clinic notes with accurate documentation and coding of service rendered.
Follows established safety practices and reports to the Associate Chief as promptly as possible any unsafe conditions, unsafe practices or any occupational illness or injury sustained. Adheres to all safety and health standards, regulations and work practices. Uses proper protective equipment as required.
Participates in quality assurance (QA) activities to include and provide data collection, data analysis and trends, and reports on changes based on data collection.
