The James J. Peters VAMC is currently recruiting for two Pharmacy Technician for the Pharmacy department. The incumbent must be knowledgeable in all areas of pharmacy, since they float, rotate, and cover all technician positions within the department. The incumbent must be able to perform a variety of complex technical functions, which require extensive knowledge of pharmaceuticals and Pharmacy practice.

The incumbent functions in the Inpatient and Outpatient Sections of the Pharmacy; however, he/she also provides services and products to ambulatory care settings. Pharmacy technicians will perform all aspects of the preparation and dispensing of drug orders and prescription items. He/she will rotate responsibilities as deemed necessary by supervisory staff depending on patients' needs. The employee arranges the timing and sequence of assigned task to meet variable workload demands. All work on prescription/medication orders and intravenous solutions is checked by a pharmacist; other work is reviewed for overall accuracy of results. The employee may rotate among various sections/divisions, as determined by scheduling and workload requirements, performing duties as assigned in order to provide technician coverage on all operating shifts. The employee will be assigned to specific pharmacy sections based on training & competencies. This position requires basic computer knowledge and familiarity with complicated Pharmacy equipment. The pharmacy technician assists the pharmacist in providing optimal pharmaceutical care and timely customer service in accordance with the mission, vision and goals of the medical center.
The Technician performs a variety of duties when assigned to this area Receives, reviews, prioritizes, and routes prescriptions selects proper medications, counts or measures proper quantities, places in appropriate containers, attaches required labels (including auxiliary labels) and records required dispensing information on prescriptions and/or medication requests. Technician may be assigned to fill front window scripts, which also include filling discharge scripts, and pick up items. Technician may be assigned to the dispensing window. This includes: bar coding scripts that are ready to be dispensed to the veteran. Technician must get proper ID and signature of any veteran receiving prescriptions. Technician also explains Pharmacy refill policy and where to send co-payment. Technician assigned to fill mail reviews scripts with filling documents for correct drug item, quantity, sig., correct physician, and number of refills. Labels all prescriptions filled appropriately, including auxiliary labels. Operates and maintains complicated pharmacy equipment.
Receives, prioritizes, prepares and routes doctors' orders for IV medications in order to prepare labels. Selects IV additives and containers, mixes and/or prepares IV medications. Records IV compounding and dispensing information and delivers finished IV products to the wards. Reviews each ward for extra or returning doses of IVs.
Selects medications in proper dosage size, form, and quantity. Prepares and immediately dispatches medications to patient care locations. Fills ("picks") individual patient medication drawers according to patient profile with the designated quantity of medications. Delivers ward stock and/or exchanges unit dose cassettes in order to provide adequate supplies of medications for patient care. Deliveries include the stocking of automated medication storage units (Omnicell) on ward and clinics.
Maintains an exact perpetual inventory of all narcotic and controlled substances in the outpatient locked cabinet and the pharmacy vault room area. Recognizes and promptly resolves any discrepancies or irregularities in inventory, inventory records, inventory balances, or orders, and forwards information to supervisor or clinical research pharmacist for follow-up. Communicates any changes in usage/usage trends to supply personnel to ensure appropriate stock is maintained for current needs. Upon receipt of inventory, verifies receipts and vouchers, adjusts inventory balances, and secures stock.
Stocking/Packaging/Compounding: Inventories, restocks, and rotates as necessary all pharmacy chemicals, medication stocks, IV solutions, supplies, and all expendable and nonexpendable pharmacy operational supplies and equipment. Receives checks, rotates, and places into stock all items received and reconciles any discrepancies in order to assure the correct stock has been received.
Work Schedule: Rotating Shifts including weekends, evening and holidays.
