The Material Measurement Laboratory is one of two metrology laboratories within the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The laboratory supports the NIST mission by serving as the national reference laboratory for measurements in the chemical, biological and material sciences. Our activities range from fundamental and applied research on the composition, structure and properties of industrial, biological and environmental materials and processes, to the development and dissemination of tools including reference measurement procedures, certified reference materials, critically evaluated data, and best practice guides that help assure measurement quality.

The major duties of this position include setup and maintenance of high-vacuum synthesis apparatus and aqueous size-exclusion chromatography instrumentation and conduct of synthesis of polymers, block copolymers and deuterium isotope labeled polymers by controlled radical polymerization methods. The position requires conduct of thermal analysis and structure characterization by methods including solution calorimetry, static and dynamic laser light scattering, and small-angle neutron and X-ray scattering that leads to systematic data with analysis that will be made publicly accessible using NIST databases; writing of peer-reviewed publications and presentations is a major outcome of this opportunity.
