    This position is located at the 3,200 acre Front Royal, VA campus of the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, National Zoological Park, Smithsonian Institution. The employee is responsible for maintaining a safe and healthy environment and safe and secure facilities for the employees, visitors, contractors, students-in-residence, and volunteers, as well for the collection animals and scientific research collections.

    As the Safety & Occupational Health Specialist, the incumbent would perform the following duties:

    • Provides technical advice on the management of the safety program for staff, visitors, volunteers, and animal collections.

    • Conducts inspections periodically and at random to ensure compliance with the Life Safety Code of the National Fire Protection Association including the visual examination of certain firefighting equipment such as: fire extinguisher, fire hoses, fire doors, etc., to determine serviceability.

    • Notifies supervisors on the findings of scheduled or unscheduled inspections, citing appropriate standards, regulations, laws, guidelines, etc., and including informational and action memoranda regarding discrepancies, safety and health programs and other related activities.

    • Provides assistance and encouragement to resolve hazards encountered by reviewing hazards and violations noted and advises Zoo supervisors of obligations under the Occupational Safety and Health Act, Smithsonian and Zoo criteria and regulations.

    • Consistently articulates safety and health practices to advance the accident prevention program.
