Summary

This position is established to provide a meaningful work opportunity in the Maintenance Worker/Mechanic, WG-4749, occupation. The employment opportunity may involve: specific work assignments and a variety of assignments, and working with intermediate and journeymen level staff in support of office programs and activities to gain practical work experience.

Responsibilities

The incumbent works as a Maintenance Worker and performs the full range of maintenance activities on buildings, utilities, vehicles, boats, and equipment. Repairs and replaces signs and other interpretive and informational structures. Performs minor maintenance and repairs to grounds keeping equipment and maintains campgrounds including cleaning restrooms, repairing picnic tables, trash removal, trimming trees and collecting roadside litter. Clears and maintains hiking trails. Operates riding mowers, and pickup trucks that pull trailers. Incumbent is responsible for preparing daily work reports and providing information to be used in compiling computer data for the Facility Management Software System. Other duties include working with youth crews and assuring all work complies with OSHA and agency safety regulations.

To be eligible for this pathways position you must:
1. Be enrolled in a degree seeking program
2. Be enrolled on one half (1/2) time basis
3. Have a minimum 2.0 grade average
4. Attending an accredited education institution
5. Provide transcripts with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking.
6. Be enrolled for the next semester/quarter following the period of this vacancy.
SCREEN OUT:
Perform simple and routine maintenance worker tasks in all of the following trades: minor carpentry work on interior and exterior of buildings, trail and grounds maintenance, general plumbing, minor painting, and
vehicle operation. Have performed these duties with own initiative with only general supervision subject to occasional inspection. Occasionally serve as a sub-foreman. Able to troubleshoot and take initiative to solve problems and accomplish work assignments in a safe manner. Have knowledge of a variety of, tools, and equipment in more than one of the trades listed above. Possess a strong work ethic, dexterity and able to perform strenuous work as required by the position. Possess the ability to use a computer, maintain records, and perform simple arithmetic calculations. Perform these duties as an expert with a high degree of independence. Previous supervisor assigned work orally, through work orders, or with written specifications as to what needed to be done. Work experience was checked to see that it met compliance with work and safety standards and policies.

A specific length of time and experience is not required. Qualification requirement emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. You must meet the 2 point level on the screen out factor/element and an average of level 2 on all factors/elements listed.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

You will NOT be considered under Pathways unless you provide supporting information from your school. Documentation may be provided in letter format from your academic advisor, school counselor, admission office, etc. to prove enrollment OR it may be provided in the form of several official documents from your school such as a copy of your official transcripts and a copy of your class schedule for next semester. Copies of documents from your school website are acceptable if they contain all relevant information as listed above. Letters from advisors or other school officials must be on school letterhead.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Pathways Agreement: If selected, you will be required to sign a Pathways Agreement which specifies the conditions of your employment as we've indicated in this job announcement. You must continue to meet the Pathways Program requirements throughout the duration of your appointment. To verify that you do, we will require proof of your continued enrollment and good standing each semester or grading period throughout your internship. Failure to do so will result in termination of your internship and employment.

Physical Demands: Works from ladders, scaffolds and platforms and where surfaces to be coated, or the parts of systems worked on are hard to reach that require incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds.

Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks, and biting insects.

1.
