This position acts as a qualified Squad Boss. Employee functions within a diverse interagency fire management program and serves as a Lead Wildland Firefighter on Type 1 Wildland Fire Module. Duties may include operating as a fully qualified chainsaw operator, or maintaining specialized equipment used to respond to wildfires. Ensures assigned vehicles and equipment are kept in a full state of readiness for emergency fire dispatch. Performs hazardous fuel reduction projects, which entail thinning, cutting and piling vegetation through use of mechanical means, e.g., chainsaw, etc.
Instructs crew members in specific tasks and techniques, conducts on-the-job training, maintains work records, ensures the work is carried out safely, and reports on performance problems and issues. The employee is expected to prepare time sheets, CA-1, and travel vouchers. As a lead, the employee will distribute and balance the workload among crew members, ensuring timely accomplishments. The incumbent will also check on work in progress, review the completed work and provide instruction on specific tasks and job techniques. The employee will also be able to resolve simple complaints of crew members; referring others to their supervisor. In addition, the employee will provide constant information to their supervisor regarding performance of workforce, progress on projects, and the specific training needs of the crew. The Lead Forestry Technician will be expected to perform following operational tasks: analyze complex fire circumstances, make fire assignments to crew members and determine when additional forces may be needed, serves as an instructor for fire related training courses, and communicate with individuals in uncontrolled fire line situations. This communication may become difficult because factors such as, extreme fire behavior and an unclear operational organization exist. She/he will maintain written reports and records of fires including fire experiences from the module.
AREA INFORMATION: Located in northwestern Wyoming, Grand Teton National Park and the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway preserves a spectacular landscape rich with majestic mountains, pristine lakes, and extraordinary wildlife. The abrupt vertical rise of the jagged Teton Range contrasts with the sage-covered valley, creating world-renowned scenery that attracts visitors from all over the world.
This position is being filled in Moran, Wyoming. Jackson (40 miles from Moran), is a small, outdoor recreation focused, thriving community of 10,000 year round residents. The town caters to four million tourists every summer, has an excellent hospital and medical community, a well-respected public school system, private schools, multiple grocery stores, excellent restaurants, and seasonal music and art festivals. Outdoor activities are available year round and include easy access to three ski resorts (Snow King Resort, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, and Grand Targhee), back-country and Nordic skiing, snowmobiling, hiking, camping, backpacking, horseback riding, boating, rafting, kayaking, hunting, cycling, mountain biking, and world class fly fishing, climbing, and mountaineering. The climate can be as extreme as the activities that are available. Winter temperatures range between lows of 20 degrees below zero to highs of 30 degrees. Summer temperatures are comfortable, with highs between 65 - 80 degrees.
A daycare center is located in Moose and an elementary school is located in Moran. Children attend Junior and Senior High Schools in Jackson with bus service provided.
Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
Work may require travel by fixed-wing or rotorwing aircraft.

Specialized Experience: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service.
