Summary

Working under the NSL-Gastonia Chemistry Section supervisor, the incumbent serves as a senior analytical chemist and subject matter expert specializing in chemical and nutritional analysis of agricultural commodities, food, and other sample types.

Responsibilities
- The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity.
- The duties may include, but are not limited to: Serves as an authority in testing agricultural commodities, food, and other sample types using chemical and nutritional analysis.
- Operates laboratory equipment and instrumentation utilized in the preparation and analysis of samples.
- Evaluates specific instrument and equipment needs and requirements as they relate to various analyses and considers available technology and recommends specific approaches.
- Performs and oversees sample preparation, extraction methods and complex evaluations using official and non-official methodologies.
- Utilizes a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for sample login, results entry and report generation.
- Collaborates with the supervisor in conducting technical audits of laboratory operations, develops findings and recommendations, and prepares written reports.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including time-in-grade restrictions, specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

TIME-IN-GRADE: Current federal employees applying for a promotion opportunity must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirement of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled.

BASIC REQUIREMENT:
Must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree or higher in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

OR

Must have a combination of education and experience with course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

FOR THE GS-12 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-11 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates:
- Applying scientific knowledge to the development of new or substantially improved analytical techniques and procedures;
- Providing consultation with agency personnel, industry, federal and state officials, academia and others involved with analytical services provided by the laboratory;
- Assessing newly emerging technology and methodology that could enhance or increase the analytical capabilities of the laboratory; and
- Conducting on-going oversight of laboratory operations to accommodate the changing demands of industry and enhances efficiency through use of improved technology/instrumentation.
Note: There is no education substitution for this grade level.

TRANSCRIPTS are required if:
- This position requires specific coursework or a degree in a specific field to be basically qualified.
- This education must have been successfully completed and obtained from an accredited school, college, or university
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
