As a Airplane Pilot, GS-2181-12, you will pilot highly advanced military Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) which involves such functions as launch and recovery, surveillance, surface attack, full scale weapons employment, mortar to arm escort, killer scout, target illumination, laser targeting, functional flight tests, and flight testing.

GENERAL EXPERIENCE: An applicant must have a competent understanding of the occupation's basic principles and concepts. Applicants should have a minimum of one year on-the-job experience in the grade (or a comparable military rank) immediately below the next higher level.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Is experience that prepares the applicant to perform the Dual Status technician duties and responsibilities. To qualify, an applicant's educational-degree study program, military professional and technical training schools or academies, and aviation certifications may apply as substitutions for some specialized experience factors.
This position requires aircraft operations knowledge and the skills to safely operate the aircraft. Applicants must demonstrate experience competencies (skills, knowledge, and abilities) to qualify for appointments to GS-2181-12 Air National Guard Dual Status remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) Officer positions. For Air National Guard positions, must have working experiences in civilian aviation programs; or, military service aviation programs (active duty or reserve components); or, in the Army National Guard Aviation Support facility; or, Air National Guard Wing/ Operations Group. Qualification competencies are determined by three factors in combination: The aircraft operated; the nature and purpose of assignments; and, the degree of hazard. Although a variety of piloting administrative tasks are performed in support of an Air National Guard aviation program, the skill qualifications for RPA GS-12 positions require experiences in general piloting activities such as, launch and recovery, surveillance, surface attack, full scale weapons employment, mortar to arm escort, killer scout, target illumination, laser targeting, functional flight tests, or flight testing. Experienced with National Guard unmanned aircraft where the pilot issued flight control commands directly to the aircraft via "stick and rudder" as opposed to those where the operator inputs flight and navigational commands into a flight control system which determines the appropriate "piloting" actions. Experienced in mission tasking, intelligence reports, and weather information. Experienced in mission planning, mission preparation, filing flight plans, and conducting crew briefings.Experienced in RPA work during combat or non-combat training missions. Experienced in non- combat missions, such as intelligence gathering, surveillance and reconnaissance; or search and rescue missions. Experienced in conducting typical non-combat missions to support local, state, and federal agencies following natural disasters; or, have other experiences in contingency operations or patrolling the Nation's borders. Experienced in piloting missions that involved tracking people or vehicles at low altitudes for several miles across a variety of terrains. Experienced in developing plans and policies, monitoring operations, or advising commanders. Experienced in basic techniques of the RPA Line-of-Sight and instrument techniques at low altitudes and speeds over unfavorable terrain from confined or isolated areas during daytime or nighttime conditions. Experienced with Advanced Instrument Procedures flying day or night missions while utilizing RPA targeting systems and sensors, to include using infra-red, electro- optical, low-light TV, or fusion. Experienced in instrument flying techniques where visual capabilities were restricted to the on-board camera field of view. Experienced in applying lost- link emergency procedures. Experienced in operating and updating Emergency Mission tactics to ensure aircraft terrain clearances; minimizing unintended flights over local populations; or, conforming to local airfield and airspace procedures. Experienced in programming code/logic into the aircraft that directs its flight controls when the links between the pilot and the aircraft are lost during flight. Experienced in the Federal Aviation Administration regulations and Concept of Operation Agreements when flying in the National Airspace System to minimize risk to manned aircraft when the operational links are lost with the RPA. Experienced with the aviation unit quality control management programs; and, unit flying, explosive, and ground safety programs in accordance with Department of the Air Force, National Guard Bureau, Air National Guard, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration directives. Experienced with directives, regulations, accident reports, safety data, and local operating conditions to determine unit safety program requirements. Experienced in coordinating with appropriate agencies, to ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulations and programs. Experienced with flight testing, maintenance testing, and Operational Test and Evaluation for existing or emerging RPA operating systems. Experienced with techniques used to determine RPA air-worthiness and evaluating mechanical deficiencies. Experienced in reading and interpreting reports that discuss the RPA suitability, functions, and general practicability of the aircraft and its components or systems. Competent in planning, scheduling, and conducting flights through Federal Aviation Administration controlled national airspace. Experienced in working within operational directives, training directives, instructions, standard operating procedures, and special instructions of National Guard Bureau, United States Army or United States Air Force, and gaining commands.
An undergraduate degree from an accredited college/university is mandatory. A Graduate Degree from an accredited civilian academic college or from an equivalent professional military education school is optimum. Must have Federal Aviation Administration certifications awarded from accredited civilian aviation programs OR must have aviation certifications from accredited military aviation schools.
