These positions are located at Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park, Paterson, NJ home to one of the nation's most powerful waterfalls. The water of the Passaic River was harnessed to power new industries that played a key role in building the U.S. economy. The successful applicant will work in a team-oriented environment to supplement the permanent park ranger workforce in the areas of visitor services, tour facilitation, visitor safety and resource protection, and encouraging visitor stewardship for the park's and National Park Service's resources. Duties to include but are not limited to: assist with the day to day operation of the interpretive division at the park. This includes providing visitor orientation and information at various locations throughout the park and historic district. Provides information regarding park program offerings as well as programs offered through other local national park sites and partners. Assists with tours through the park and historic district (1.5 mile, 1.5 hour program) and at the Paterson Museum. Perform various administrative duties such as recording and reporting visitor statistics, gathering information for reports. Uses office equipment such as photocopier, computer and laminator. Prints and stocks venues with park publications. Assists in opening and closing procedures at the park's Welcome Center. Staffs sales outlets at park bookstore, operating a cash register, credit card machine and conducts retail transactions. Assists in taking inventory and re-stocking the bookstore. Staffs a visitor center desk and answers questions/provide information. Answers telephones and takes messages, following up when necessary. Conducts routine searches for information or forms on the Internet, and uses park publications or prepared secondary sources to augment park knowledge. Follows standard operating procedures and supervisory guidance in conducting routine daily tasks. The National Park Service will be working with the Paterson Museum to provide visitor services at the Welcome Center and the Paterson Museum. Since the National Park accomplishes much of its work through partnerships on a daily basis, it is expected that the incumbent will be professional in all dealings with the public and institutional partners at all times.
Area Information: Paterson is the third largest city in New Jersey. The National Park is located within the Paterson's Great Falls Historic District where resources abound to illustrate and interpret the birth of the diverse water-powered industries and the people who lived and worked here. Work stations are located within the National Park boundary as well as the historic district. These areas include Overlook Park, Upper Raceway Park, Mary Ellen Kramer Park, outdoor or indoor welcome desk and the Paterson Museum. Duties involve prolonged standing/sitting outdoors, walking distances of 2-4 miles per day. Other duties include walking on paved and unpaved uneven surfaces and speaking to groups of 20-80 people outside in a noisy urban environment. Will assist visitors with disabilities to the extent of their abilities and training. Work will be performed in outdoor areas resulting in exposure to extreme temperatures, rain, snow, wind, and direct sunlight. Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 or 1730 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).
If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.
The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.
Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.
