    Summary

    This position is located in the warehouse area of the Logistics Service in a Veteran Affairs Health Care System (VA HCS) and supported catchment area. The position is located at an assigned Veterans Administration medical facility performing warehouse work. Handles or oversees one or more product lines, a segment of a large warehouse, or may serve as the senior employee in a smaller warehouse or supply facility.

    The Incumbent will usually handle or oversee one or more product lines, a segment of a large warehouse, or serve as the senior employee in a smaller warehouse or supply facility. The position may assist the supervisor in developing plans for storage and arrangement of stock in accordance with agency regulations which determine the configuration setup, movement, rearrangement and traffic flow. Grade 6 materials handlers in larger warehouse facilities typically have responsibility for a storage and space utilization in accordance with agency regulations for a specific commodity or equipment group such as general supplies, construction materials, medical supplies, high value items, or electronic systems, and usually work on their own initiative to consolidate materials, and provide maximum space utilization and protection of materials.

    The Incumbent serves as the primary materials handler for multiple locations within the warehouse. The work requires an in-depth knowledge of the overall warehousing plan, documentation requirements, and accepted warehousing methods, procedures, and techniques. As required for the grade 6 level, the employee must have a thorough knowledge of the physical distribution functions of a warehouse such as receiving, storing, issuing, and preserving. Materials handler employees lay out storage, prepares inventory reports, and directs shipments to storage areas. The employee also operates a pickup truck on and off the base and is skilled in operating a forklift.

    Materials handlers are responsible for a full range of warehouse functions and work with a high degree of independence with general direction provided by the supervisor. Review of the work is based on results achieved, including the accuracy of stock balances, orderliness of storage areas, adherence to general warehouse plans, and customer service effectiveness. In smaller facilities, grade 6 materials handlers may have responsibility for the movement of the stock as well the maintenance of stock level inventories. Materials handlers at this level are typically expected to deal with a variety of issues and exercise greater judgment and independent action on work control and storage. The position will also provide guidance to lower graded employees.
