    Responsibilities

    The position is in the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), Office of Prices and Living Conditions (OPLC).  BLS is the principal fact-finding agency of the Federal Government in the broad field of labor economics and statistics.  BLS collects, processes, analyzes, and disseminates essential statistical data to the American public, the U. S. Congress, other Federal agencies, State and local governments, business and labor.  Office of Prices and Living Conditions (OPLC) is organized into six divisions as follows:  Division of Consumer Prices and Price Indexes, Division of Industrial Prices and Price Indexes, Division of International Prices, Division of Consumer Expenditure Surveys, Division of Price and Index Number Research, and Division of Price Statistical Methods.  The work of the office includes four major economic and statistical program areas: (1) The Consumer Prices Indexes (CPI) program produces monthly data on changes in the prices paid by urban consumers for a representative basket of goods and services;  (2) the Producer Price Index (PPI) program measures the average change over time in the selling prices received by domestic producers for their output. (3) the International Price Program produces Import Price Indexes (MPI) and Export Prices Indexes (XPI) containing data on changes in the prices of nonmilitary goods and services traded between the U.S. and the rest of the world; and (4) the Consumer Expenditure Surveys (CE) program consists of two surveys—the quarterly Interview survey and the Diary survey—that provide information on the buying habits of consumers residing in the United States, including data on their expenditures, income, and household characteristics.

    The Economist will serve in one of the following offices:

    The incumbent serves as a Senior Economist in the PPI Branch of Industrial Prices; Services Section.

    The incumbent serves as a Senior Economist in the PPI Branch of Program Development and Process Measurement; Section of Program Development.

    The incumbent serves as a Senior Economist in the CPI Branch of Consumer Prices. 

    The incumbent serves as a Senior Economist in the CPI Branch of Index Methods, Analysis & Evaluation; Production and Control Section. 

    The incumbent serves as a Senior Economist in the Division of Consumer Expenditure Surveys, Branch of Research and Program Development.

    The incumbent serves as a Senior Economist in the IPP Branch of International Prices; Food, Raw Materials and Apparels Section

    The incumbent serves as a Senior Economist in the IPP Branch of Index Methods, Analysis & Evaluation; Information and Analysis Section.
