As a FIRE CHIEF, GS-0081-9 your duties are below;
Responsible for the management, supervision and update training of the fire fighting force to provide fire protection and fire prevention programs in support of the ANG installation and airfield operations at an airport with a moderate number of air moves daily. Program responsibility includes providing initial response structural fire protection for ANG facilities and backup support to the airport authority. The Airport Authority retains overall charge in emergency situations both on the ANG Base and on Airport property. Plans and schedules periodic checks of facilities to enforce adherence to the best possible fire prevention practices and detect fire safety hazards.
Maintains a knowledge and record of Federal, State and Municipal requirements for fire/crash rescue and structural fire operations and procedures as well as safety education material to facilitate adoption of industrial safety and fire prevention practices to military methods. Serves as technical advisor in providing fire prevention information and guidance to operating officials of supported military activities.
Directs proper use and care of civilian and military fire fighting and rescue equipment. Establishes order and sequence by which fire fighting crews respond to alarms. Devises techniques for entry into structures and aircraft in order to rescue personnel or recover equipment. Solves problems involving extremely volatile elements such as POL products. Develops comprehensive fire protection checklists and pre-fire plans for hazardous operations. Directs rescue, fire fighting, and salvage operations during all fires.
Develops on-the-job training program and assigns phases of training to subordinate supervisors and fire fighters. Establishes requirements for and provides and monitors the use of special training aids and devices. Orders drills to observe fire fighting and rescue fire proficiency. Advises and counsels operating officials on problems relating to fire protection and prevention training.
Plans and schedules periodic visits of ANG facilities to enforce adherence to acceptable fire prevention practices and to detect fire safety hazards. Observes fire hazards and determines appropriate corrective action. Reviews plans for construction and alteration of facilities to assure adequacy of fire protective features.
Accomplishes supervisory responsibilities over employees:
a. Work Planning and Organization: To meet the general schedules, priorities, and requirements established by higher levels of supervision, plans and revises work schedules on a weekly, monthly, project or longer basis to assure even flow and distribution and ensure expeditious handling of priorities. Coordinates work accomplishment with other units. Prepares workload and production reports as necessary.
b. Work Assignment and Review: Assigns work to employees or assigns employees to positions equitably; breaks out tasks as necessary to provide experience and training. Explains work requirements, methods, and procedures as needed, giving special instructions where required and answers technical questions. Reviews work in process, completed work or spot checks work not otherwise in need of review to assess quality and quantity. Informs employees about policies, procedures and practices of management as they relate to the unit.
c. Supervisory Personnel Functions: Informs higher level supervisor of anticipated vacancies, increase in workload or other circumstances to obtain replacements, temporary help or additional staff; informally recommends promotions, assignments or other status changes of assigned personnel such as retention or release of probationers, step increases and recommends incentive awards; approves and disapproves leave; resolves informal complaints within his/her jurisdiction, contacting higher level supervision or staff, as appropriate; directs on-the-job training and cross training; explains performance requirements and informs individual of progress in meeting the requirements. Holds corrective interviews with employees and refers disciplinary problems to higher level supervisor; prepares formal performance appraisals, where labor management agreements exist, deals with union stewards on appropriate matters; implements provisions or personnel management programs with well established procedures such as EEO, Career Development, Training, Time, Leave, Incentive Awards, Grievances and Safety.
Performs other duties as assigned.
NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED: This is an excepted position that requires military membership in a compatible military assignment in the Iowa Air National Guard. Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform. Acceptance of this excepted position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment.

Military Rank Requirements: ENLISTED (CMSgt to SrA)
Security Clearance: Must be able to obtain and maintain a SECRET Security clearance
Substitution of Education for Specialized Experience -Appropriate firefighter training may be substituted for experience on a month-for-month basis. Firefighter training obtained as part of a high school curriculum may be substituted for the six months of general experience required for GS-3. Successful completion of a two year course of study in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or other related fields of study is qualifying for GS-4. Successful completion of a four-year course of study in an accredited college or university with major study in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study is qualifying for GS-5.
To receive credit for Education, you must provide college transcripts to support your Educational claims.
SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENT: Employment is subject to attaining and maintaining a secret clearance as required by this position. If the selectee does not possess the applicable security clearance when hired, application must be made within 30 days of the start date. Failure to make application for the required security clearance will result in termination of employment.
Failure to complete NGB prescribed courses at the PEC for new FTS personnel within the first year of employment may be cause for reassignment or termination of FTS.
