    Summary

    Incumbents at this level serves a staff dietitians at the full performance level. Registered dietitians are responsible for independently planning, developing and directing all nutrition care activities (e.g., food service and/or clinical nutrition). Registered dietitians service as impertinent member of the interdisciplinary team of care providers.

    Responsibilities

    The Clinical Registered Dietitian (RD) is the medical nutrition expert responsible for independently planning, developing and directing all clinical nutrition care activities for assigned clients, including those with complex medical and nutritional needs. RDs serve as key members of the interdisciplinary team and focus on providing exceptional nutrition care and guidance to optimize health.

    Nutritional Care

    Conducts a comprehensive nutrition assessment for patients at nutritional risk. Develops and implements an individualized plan for medical nutrition therapy in accordance with the patient's medical program goals and objectives. Accurately obtains and interprets medical information pertinent to the patient's nutritional care to determine risk, assess nutritional status and develop individual specialized care plans.
    Calculates nutritional requirements (calories, protein, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, electrolytes, fluid) and necessary diet restrictions or food/drug interactions. Diet prescribed is tailored to each individual client's according to physical and metabolic needs and designs the nutritional treatment plan with consideration for psychosocial, behavioral, ethnic and cultural factors to obtain desirable outcomes and promote long term adherence to a medical nutritionals care plan.

    Develops a therapeutic plan for specialized nutrition support, including enteral and parenteral nutrition for patients with complex medical and nutritional needs. Identifies patients in need of nutrition support and recommends the appropriate mode of nutrition support, including suitable route, formula, and rate of administration. Provides initial and on-going nutritional assessments of patients receiving enteral and/or parenteral nutrition.

    Orders labs, diets and consults per Scope of Practice/Clinical privileges. Evaluates and monitors the effectiveness and outcome of medical nutrition therapy interventions. May require the development of a therapeutic plan for specialized nutrition support, including enteral and parenteral nutrition for patients with complex medical and nutritional needs. Identity patients in need of nutrition support and recommends the appropriate mode of nutrition supplement including suitable route, formula, and rate of administration.

    Documents nutrition care plan in the patient's medical record, including nutrition assessment data, medical nutrition therapy initiated and recommendations, results of nutrition counseling and discharge planning. Documentation supports an interdisciplinary approach and continuity of care.

    Works cooperatively with Foodservice staff to assure conformance to diet prescriptions.

    Nutrition Education
    Assess educational needs and provides nutrition counseling for individuals and groups, incorporating a learning approach that considers the cultural, religious, educational, and medical situation of the patient. Includes information regarding budgeting, meu planning, food purchasing and preparation, food storage and sanitation.
    Serves on Nutrition, Medical Management, Health Education or other committees as assigned. Participates in community projects and education as needed/assigned

    Documents in the medical record, the education materials provided, the care plan determined by the provider and the client, an assessment of the client's comprehension level to the education given and the expected compliance.
    Business Function
    Maintains productivity standards and practices, effective time management, and prioritizing of tasks.

    Maintains accurate record keeping of daily clinical activities through Event Capture System (ECS), including information required for patient workload accounting, scheduling and billing.
    Manages resources (time, materials, personnel) in a cost-effective and efficient manner. Assists in developing and revising patient education materials, clinical forms, and protocols.

    Schedules or assists with scheduling Nutrition Clinic appointments according to scheduling policies to include use of the Electronic Wait List (EWL) as needed.

    Serves as the nutrition expert on the interdisciplinary treatment team which includes physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals. Advises interdisciplinary health care team of nutritional recommendations, goals, and efficacy of nutrition therapy.
    Professional Development
    Maintains dietetic registration and continuing education requirements.
    Develops and implements an individualized plan for professional growth and development including participation in professional organizations and activities, workshops, seminars and staff development programs.
    Participate in departmental and/or interdisciplinary meetings, task forces, and projects. Performs the related duties as required.
