This position is located at Nicodemus National Historic Site (NHS) at Nicodemus, Kansas. Office space and a visitor center for Nicodemus NHS are housed within leased buildings in Nicodemus (pop. 18-25). The park interprets the history and significance of Nicodemus as one of the first and the longest lasting of the African American towns founded on the western frontier as the Reconstruction Era ended. Descendants of the original settlers still live in town and non-resident descendants retain connections to the community with many returning for an annual Homecoming weekend. Due to the sparse population of northwestern Kansas, there are limited opportunities to partner with organizations, engage volunteers, and attract school groups (except through distance-learning).
Nicodemus lies an hour north of the largest regional center, Hays, Kansas (pop. 20,000) with access off Interstate 70 and then by state and county roads. Hays has shopping and dining opportunities. It is home to Fort Hays State University, regional health center. The county seat, Hill City (pop. 1,400), is 12 miles east of Nicodemus and is the closest public-school system. Mid-range housing is somewhat limited, but options are available in surrounding small communities within Graham or Rooks Counties with commutes ranging from 20-45 minutes.
