The Medical Record Technician/Coder is a staff position located under the Health Information Management Section (HIMS) section of the Health Administration Service (HAS) at the VA Loma Linda Healthcare System. This position is responsible for maintaining the quality of patient records, assigning of appropriate International Classification of Diseases Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT-4) and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes.Learn more about this agency
Incumbent reports directly to Chief, HIMS or designee with minimal supervision. The employee independently plans, coordinates, and carries out assignments in accordance with instructions, policies, previous training, or accepted practices in health information management. On assignments that may involve controversial matters, the employee discusses issues and possible approaches with the supervisor before carrying out the assignment. The supervisor reviews completed work for technical soundness, accomplishment of specific goals, and for conformity to hospital policy and regulatory requirements. Employee keeps supervisor informed of progress and problems on a regular basis. Lead coders review coding and assist coders in improving coding accuracy; provide coding guidance to various levels of staff to promote consistency in practice and compliance with coding rules and regulations; initiate various reports and analyze data; and may also coordinate, assign, and monitor the workflow.
Work Schedule: Full-Time; 7:30am - 4:00pm; Monday - Friday
