This position offers a unique opportunity to serve as an integral part of a Division with responsibility for programs that provide funding for the development of and access to critical animal models, which offer essential clues to a broad range of human disorders such as Parkinson's disease, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and AIDS. This Division also supports funding for pre- and post-doctoral training and career development for veterinary scientists who provide unique expertise to translational biomedical research.
A Health Scientist in DCM
-provides technical leadership and scientific guidance in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of critical parts of the biomedical research continuum, providing support for animal models that build the bridge between basic science and human medicine, with discoveries in one species enhancing understanding of another
-aids in establishing collaborations between DCM-supported grantees and grantees supported by the NIH Institutes and Centers
-manages extramural research and research training programs
-identifies research areas warranting either increased or decreased funding emphasis
-provides leadership and direction in the development of plans and timelines to implement new programmatic recommendations and in the development of new solicitations
-provides input in interpreting major polices relating to research programs that utilize laboratory animals, both mammalian and non-mammalian
-serves as a liaison with a wide variety of groups and organizations connecting biomedical research interests and other stakeholders.
Although not required, the ideal candidate will possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate degree in the biomedical sciences and have research experience and knowledge of research programs in one or more scientific areas related to basic and/or translational research and the interactions between them. They also need to have demonstrated experience in planning, implementing and analyzing program objectives and priorities and leading a research program involving extensive internal and external collaboration. Because this position will identify research animal resource needs, applicants are required to be knowledgeable in various aspects of laboratory animal sciences, including vertebrate and invertebrate species, animal genetics, molecular biology, and other relevant areas.
