This position is located within the Audiology Service at the Beckley VA Medical Center. Audiology Service provides a full range of diagnostic and rehabilitative audiology services, hearing aid assessments, diagnostic hearing evaluations, medicolegal compensation and pension examinations and employee hearing conservations. The primary purpose of this position is to assist audiologists by performing non-professional services for the veteran patient.

MAJOR DUTIES include but are not limited to:
The incumbent provides independent services in three major areas, patient education, hearing aid repair, and management of hearing aid program stock, supplies and clinic environment.
Patient Education/Hearing Aid Issuance
The incumbent provides initial patient orientation to hearing aid use before the patient is fitted. When delivered to the clinic, the technician certifies the hearing aids and checks the hearing aids to ensure that all ordered components were received, the hearing aids are operational and are ready to be issued. As part of the hearing aid fitting, the technician instructs the client in the proper use, rights and responsibilities, and safety measures for safe and effective use of the hearing aid and any assistive listening devices that are issued. Documents the patient education provided in the medical record.
The incumbent administers before and after assessments of audiology services provided to determine customer satisfaction, degree of functional improvement, or patient compliance. Collects, tabulates and analyzes patient response data that are used for the clinic's performance improvement program. The incumbent may be called upon to aid in research projects requiring such information.
Hearing Aid Repair
During clinic hours, the employee meets with veterans on a one-on-one basis to solve hearing aid problems. Provides primary level troubleshooting and repair for veterans who are experiencing hearing aid problems. Takes ear mold impressions. Makes routine repairs. Evaluates the hearing aid's function. Counsels the veteran in optimal use and proper methods of care for the instruments. All interactions are properly documented in the medical record in the form of clinical progress notes.
The incumbent prepares all necessary paperwork and records. Ensure it is properly tracked during the repair. When the hearing aid is returned, the technician checks and adjusts the trimmers on the aid and checks to ensure the aid is operational. The incumbent either mails the hearing aid to the veteran or decides if the veteran should be scheduled for an appointment with the audiologist or technician.
The incumbent evaluates the operation of Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs) and determines if the ALD is working properly and performs routine repairs. Those ALDs that the incumbent determines cannot be repaired on site are processed for repair or replacement. When the incumbent finds skill or knowledge deficits, provides specific training or patient education and documents it in the patient record.
Management of Hearing Aid Program Stock, Supplies and Clinic Environment
The incumbent manages all stock and custom hearing aids, batteries, assistive listening devices and ear mold orders. Manages the entry, certification and issuance of hearing aids, ALDs and batteries using the Remote Order Entry System (ROES). Monitors supplies and maintains an adequate supply of materials to meet the clinic needs. Incumbent contacts by phone or computer correspondence SPD, commercial suppliers and hearing aid manufacturers. The incumbent stocks, cleans and sanitizes hearing aid evaluation, examination and serving areas and equipment.

Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary but also requires some standing, walking, bending, and pushing of wheelchairs. At times, a light to moderate amount of lifting is required. The work requires above average agility and dexterity. Long periods of sitting while using a computer are also required daily.
