MAJOR DUTIES: Include but are not limited to: Present interpretive and educational talks, walks, tours, demonstrations, structured and impromptu talks, and various other programs to diverse audiences following prescribed outlines. Guide groups on tours of the site while effectively communicating accurate resource and historical information. Staff the park visitor center/information desk and serve as a front-line representative of the organization, welcoming visitors and answering a variety of visitor questions in a professional and courteous manner. Assist in preparing interpretive displays and written content for print and electronic publication. Perform various administrative duties such as recording and reporting visitor statistics and gathering information for reports. Educate visitors regarding rules, regulations, and safety concerns to ensure visitor safety and preservation of natural and cultural resources. Conduct cooperating association sales, properly accounting for funds. Respond to visitor information requests received by mail, email, and telephone, providing information orally and/or in writing.
This is a Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectee are guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. The typical season for is February thru October, but can be variable during these months due to project requirements or weather conditions.
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
There is no substitution of education for experience at the grade level(s) of this announcement.
Physical Demands: The work requires standing for long periods of time, walking for long distances, climbing and descending steep inclines, bending and lifting moderately heavy items. Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to high volume of personal contacts, occasional emergency responses, and repetitive nature of interpretive programs.
Working Conditions: The work is performed in setting in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomfort and unpleasantness, e.g. high or low temperatures, confined spaces or adverse weather conditions.
