The Medical Surgical Nurse cares for veteran patients who are admitted to the inpatient setting for an acute medical/surgical problem, diagnostic treatments that cannot be facilitated in the outpatient setting and who may require telemetry monitoring. The RN recognizes early signs and symptoms and provides medical treatment of arrhythmias, performs assessment and reassessment of the medical/surgical patient and treats pain appropriately. This RN is competent to perform peritoneal dialysis; and has the ability to assess, perform interventions, and maintain skin integrity for patients at risk. They must be knowledgeable of; and adhere to infection control standards and policies. The RN must be able to promote a safe environment for all patients including those with altered sensorium due to medication or an acute or chronic illness. The RN must adhere to the ICARE values of the VA and Patient Centered Care Initiatives. Nurses are to document using appropriate forms, follow protocols, SOPs and guidelines, adhere to policies and evaluate resources for each shift. They must successfully pass a telemetry exam in order to work on a telemetry unit.
