    This vacancy is for an Advanced Practice Nurse, Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP) Thoracic in Surgery Service at the University Drive Division of the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System.

    1. Evaluates and cares for the surgical and chronic medically treated patient. Consistently performs comprehensive physical, psychological and social assessments, develops the appropriate plan of care and provides patient follow up as needed.
      1. Acts as a resource expert in the Thoracic surgery patient population.
      2. Performs history and physical examinations.
      3. Ensures patients have obtained appropriate diagnostic studies prior to presenting to clinic
      4. Orders medications, tests, diagnostic, laboratory and radiological exams and reviews/follow up on results in conjunction with the plan of care. Reviews/interprets testing and notifies Thoracic Attending for further evaluation when necessary. Maintains close follow up on biopsy results/PET scans/CT scans.
      5. Orders Observation Unit and/or SDPU admissions.
      6. Places procedure and surgery consults, while collaborating with multiple disciplines. Manages OR cancellations/rescheduled cases to maximize OR utilization.
      7. Orders various consults needed to provide optimal care for this population. Provides patients with pertinent instructions/education prior to testing/procedures/surgery.
      8. Conducts CVT/VVC clinics for appropriate Thoracic surgery patient population.
      9. Performs triage of Thoracic consults and phone calls as needed.
      10. Answer patient questions received through phone calls and view alerts.
      11. Participates in daily inpatient rounding
      12. Thoracic surgery representative for the daily utilization review meeting.
      13. Potential for Operating Room assistance.
    2. Provides leadership in the application of the nursing process to client care and organizational processes which lead to improved outcomes at the Thoracic surgery and/or systems level.
    3. Provides leadership in identifying and addressing ethical issues that arise, placing ethical consults as needed.
    4. Acts as a resource to nursing staff and providers regarding Thoracic issues, providing education to disciplines as necessary.
      1. Provides education to medical students/residents/fellows, etc. regarding processes on clinic days as well as discharge planning, CPRS orders, etc.
    5. Works effectively within the surgical team to identify, analyze and resolve patient care issues on a daily basis and identify, analyze and resolve patient care trends that are negatively affecting the patient.
    6. Collaborates with other healthcare providers to improve patient care, particularly the IR, Radiology, Hem/Oncology and Pulmonary services. Maintains an understanding and incorporates health promotion and disease prevention within daily practice.
    7. Communicates with CBOC's and outside hospitals to obtain information on follow up testing to expedite patient care.
    8. Maintains awareness and promotes quality initiatives within the surgical population, specifically the Thoracic population.
    9. Other duties as assigned
    This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan reimbursement program. If selected for this position you must meet specific individual eligibility requirements, and submit your application within four months of appointment. The final award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Service office.

    Work Schedule: Monday - Friday: Compressed schedule shift 6:00am-3:30pm/6:00am-10:00am Tour of duty may be rotated to meet patient care needs. Possible Saturday clinics as needed.
