    This position is part of the Willow Beach National Fish Hatchery. As a Fish Biologist you will plan, direct, coordinate, and control the activities of the hatchery.

    The duties of the position include, but are not limited to:

    • Assisting Project Leader with establishment of hatchery and with preparation and accuracy of station action plans, program planning documents, annual reports and other fiscal reports.
    • Working closely with Project Leader in research activities.
    • Overseeing and performing daily operation and administration of the facility's fish culture and propagation programs.
    • Assigning and evaluating work performed by other Hatchery personnel to accomplish daily operation and long term goals.
    • Serving as Acting Project Leader in the absence of the Project Leader.
    • Ensuring and directing the operation and maintenance of recirculating aquaculture systems.
    • Participating with the Project Leader in formulating annual and long range operating plans essential to production and distribution of economically, culturally, and environmentally significant aquatic species.
    • Supporting the Service and the hatchery as the Collateral Duty Safety Officer (CDSO).

    Physical Demands: The work is primarily performed at the hatchery site, both in and out of the office. A lot of time is spent outdoors throughout the hatchery facilities and grounds, and occasionally away from the station. The work often requires considerable exertion such as standing, walking, and physically handling fish food, fish, and equipment. Work requires average agility and dexterity. Activities involve working on wet and slippery surfaces, often around deep water. Incumbent must recognize the need for a safe work environment and perform duties in a manner that will not put self or others at risk.

    Work Environment: The work includes both office and outdoor locations. Temperature and weather extremes are encountered in the performance of the outdoor work. The employee is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow workers, or property with which entrusted, and take corrective action to eliminate any hazards.
