    IT Specialist (Security) serves as a Computer Specialist (Lead Senior Security Assessor) in the Security Assessment Group (AMK-232 and AMK-234). The incumbent will administer, develop, deliver, and support information technology (IT) systems and services. The paramount requirement is knowledge of IT principles, concepts, and methods; e.g. data, storage, software applications, and networking.

    Work in the Technical Category at this pay band is characterized by such assignments as:

    • Collects, records, and analyzes data/information; identifies problems; and performs analysis.
    • Plans and carries out projects for collecting detailed data or information from primary sources. Such projects are typically a part of a large and continuing program. Plans and analyzes data. May suggest data sources and prepare interpretive reports of limited scope.

    Characteristic information technology assignments in the Security specialization at this pay band include:

    • Implements and disseminates standard IT security tools, procedures, and practices to protect information assets.
    • Plans and coordinates the delivery of an IT security awareness training program for end users at all levels in the organization.
    • Evaluates established security authentication technologies such as public key infrastructure certificates, secure cards, and biometrics for adoption in various FAA environments.
    • Administers and monitors implementation of authentication software.
    • Identifies and specifies standard information systems security requirements associated with migrations to new IT environments/applications and provides guidance in planning and implementing migration activities.
    • Reviews specifications for procurement of new but established software to ensure compliance with security requirements at the systems or LAN level.

    Duties Include:

    Applies experience and detailed technical knowledge to evaluate security controls on a variety of information system platforms (Windows, Linux/Unix, etc.), databases (Oracle, MS-SQL, MySQL), and networks. Collects, verifies, compiles and summarizes security controls for compliance to NIST SP 800 series of documents; assists in developing and presenting training on NIST and other Departmental or Agency specific policies, guidance and Orders.

    Work is reviewed periodically by peers and the Team Lead during assigned tasks and at completion to ensure timeliness and all aspects of quality. Work activities typically support the work of other employees and contribute to activities of the organization. Contacts are internal and external to the organizational unit, to include interactions with mid- and senior-level information security personnel.

    Provides guidance and mentoring to less-experienced security staff as requested by the Manager. Demonstrates some independence in planning time, prioritizing tasks and utilizing assigned resources to accomplish assigned projects. Established policies/procedures provide guidance for most assignments, but allow some discretion to select the most appropriate approach.

    Travel Required

    Occasional travel - The job may require travel from time- to-time, but not on a regular basis. The travel may be for training or other work-related duties.
