This residency is designed to prepare physical therapists to become skilled cardiopulmonary physical therapy clinicians by providing them with education through academic, clinical, self-study and research experiences. Participants will function as an integral member of an interdisciplinary team to assure integrated care for the patient, and will be given the opportunity to provide specialty level care for Veterans with a variety of cardiac and pulmonary conditions. The program is designed to provide residents with a year-long, intensive study of cardiopulmonary physical therapy, preparing them to sit for (and pass) the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Clinical Specialist Examination offered by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. Clinical time during the residency, which includes structured one-on-one mentoring, is provided for 75-80% of a typical week. The remainder of time is spent completing didactic education, research, projects and presentations related to the overall curriculum of the residency program. Residents receive didactic education on numerous topics related to cardiopulmonary physical therapy which are expected knowledge areas published in the current Description of Residency Practice for Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Physical Therapy. The content is taught by expert faculty from VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System and the University of Michigan Health System Department of Physical Therapy Department. Learning units are taught on a set schedule throughout the year. At scheduled intervals, residents participate in interdisciplinary rounds, case seminars, interdisciplinary education conferences and have the opportunity to assume the role of clinical instructor.
