    This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Capitol Visitor Center, Gift Shops Division and will be overseeing and managing daily operations. This supervisory position delivers excellent customer service to visitors while ensuring their unique and memorable experience of the Capitol.

    Responsibilities

    The individual selected for this position will:

    Serve as the first line supervisor to a group of employees performing retail work. Exercise leadership and administrative and technical supervision necessary for accomplishing the work of the Gift Shops. Outline overall responsibilities, make assignments, set priorities, and provide professional, technical, and administrative advice and assistance as required. Plan organizational structure and staffing needs, determine type of jobs required, and assign duties to key subordinate positions. Review and approve justifications for personnel requirements. Review and approve job descriptions and select key employees. Resolve complaints and grievances within scope of authority and refer others to higher authority with appropriate recommendations. Maintain effective communications with AOC staff and contractors to ensure they understand and support policies, procedures, personnel, and other management initiated actions. Seek suggestions from employees. Ensure participation in project and job-related training activities.

    Assist in overseeing the daily operation of the Gift Shops to ensure a quality visitor experience through delivery of consistent service standards, operational readiness, and maximum visitor flow in a safe and secure environment. Assess and recommend changes to existing procedures to resolve a range of issues in managing a specialty retail operation. Independently resolve fiscal, personnel, and management problems that occur in retail gift shops with high traffic flow and a wide assortment of merchandise. Provide guidance on best practices and procedures. Drive sales through sales team development.

    Adhere to established policies and procedures to assist in the development and maintenance of relationships with various stakeholders in the government and private industry. Supervise routine operating situations and teams with other staff members to ensure that store layouts, product placements, and visual presentations meet established standards. Work with others in implementing strategic plans for assortment changes, promotions, and special events. Oversee products and other retail assets through the performance of accurate inventory procedures.

    Due to operational requirements, the Assistant Gift Shop Operations Manager is expected to work Saturdays and holidays and may be expected to work Sundays and/or evenings in support of special events.
