    The maintenance worker is assigned to the Facilities Management Service of the West Palm
    Beach VA Medical Center and independently performs standard, common and more routine
    carpentry, plastering, and masonry and painting tasks and assists experienced, skilled
    journeymen on more complex, unusual and difficult tasks such as plumbing and light
    electrical tasks.

    • Receives instruction in progressively more difficult skills and associated knowledge in order to develop appropriate skills and knowledge of the architectural trades.
    • Incumbent maintains existing signage, interior and exterior.
    • Duties also include maintenance, repair and reconfiguration, and moving of office and ward furniture.
    • Performs carpentry work which involves measuring, cutting and constructing or repairing
      wood or wood substitute items such as scaffolds, staging parts, panels, bins, pallets, concrete
      forms, dry walls, sheathing and roof decking where required to fit and accurately provide a
      serviceable product {and when appearance is not essential).
    • Uses ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide and work with simple fractions to plan and
      measure material according to requirements and dimensions outlined in instructions.
    • Is skilled in use of tapes, rules and squares.
    • Ability to gain experience and skill in using shop tools such as hammers, handsaws, planes, screwdrivers, power saws and power planers.
    • Perform masonry work for maintenance, repair and construction of a variety of structures
      and surfaces of block, stone and other related materials.
    • Removes damaged portions of walls,
      partitions or other similar structures in preparation for repair of damage. Prepare portions of
      walls for the installation of doors or windows.
    • Performs standard coating methods such as brushing, rolling and spraying, by the use of
      coating materials that are prepared according to specific directions and by the application of
      coating techniques that insure surfaces are fully coated, protected and free from drips and
    • Prepare surf aces by methods such as sanding and wire brushing. Thin, stirs and mixes
      coating materials according to specific directions.
    • Applies various coating materials (for example, paints, varnishes and shellacs) with brushes,
      rollers, spray guns and other related methods and techniques, and sees that the coating finish
      meets surface protection requirements.
    • Ability to learn layout new signage to meet the Medical Center's program changes including
      all way finding directories, interior and exterior, matching the existing fonts, heights and

    • Perform periodic maintenance of all exterior way finding and regulatory
      traffic signage including replacement of damaged or worn signs.
    • Incumbent must be proficient in the use of computerized signage equipment and have the dexterity to work with very small letters numbers and graphic symbols necessary in fabricating signage for special
    • Must have the ability to maintain, repair and reconfigure office and ward furniture.
    • To include workstations, chairs, filing cabinets and patient bedroom furniture, using glue,
      clamps, drills, - screwdrivers and routers for Formica repairs.
    • Function under general supervision of the Carpenter Shop supervisor with work subject to
      review for quality, completeness, timeliness and adherence to policies.
    • Incumbent is under on-the-job supervision of an experienced, skilled journeyman from all
      trades (Carpentry, Masonry, Electrical, Plumbing, and HVAC) who directs technical work
      assignments, demonstrates proper techniques, provides instruction and reviews, checks and
      critiques work. Standard, basic and routine tasks are performed without supervision except
      for spot checks and review and inspection of completed work.
    • Develops and gains experience completing job and equipment maintenance records and
      assembles lists of basic materials and supplies needed for particular work assignments.
    • Transport tools, equipment and materials appropriate to work assignments to and from work
      areas and shop and storage areas as needed by trade journeymen.
    • Keeps shop and work areas and equipment clean, secure and orderly.
    • Observes safe practices and- safely and properly removes and disposes of waste, debris and excess materials.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned and may be required to become familiar with some of the basic functions, procedures, methods and skills of other related work and assist in these functions
      in the absence of other personnel to the extent of the· employee's competence and ability.
    Work Schedule: Monday- Friday 07:00 am - 03:30 pm, tour of duty is subject to change based on the needs of the facility.
