SSA's Office of the General Counsel (OGC) advises the Commissioner on legal matters, and provides all legal advice to the Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, and subordinate organizational components in connection with the operation and administration of the agency. The Offices of the Regional Chief Counsels provide the Commissioner, SSA Regional Commissioners, and various regional components with legal and managerial expertise, as well as litigation support, legal services, and advice.Learn more about this agency
Serving as the senior OGC official in their respective region, the Regional Chief Counsel reports to SSA's General Counsel/Deputy General Counsel, and is consulted in connection with questions or tasks that are of special sensitivity to the Agency. S/he serves as principal regional advisor to the General Counsel with respect to the legal aspects of the formulation, coordination, revision and execution of administrative policy and programs within the following geographical areas:
- Denver - Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming
- Seattle - Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington
The incumbent participates with the General Counsel and the Deputy General Counsel in the overall planning, reporting, and budgeting of the program and litigation work of the Office of the General Counsel, and in the selection, assignment, utilization, and evaluation of professional and clerical staff. S/he coordinates work where problems and issues are referable to more than one attorney; obtains consistent interpretations on matters throughout the Office of the General Counsel and other Regions; and equalizes workloads by provisional assignments of attorneys within the Region.
