    Summary

    This position is located in Smithsonian Institution’s Office of Smithsonian Facilities (SF), Office of Facilities Management and Reliability (OFMR).  The incumbent for this position serves under the general supervision of the Automotive Mechanic Supervisor in the Vehicle Repair Shop, Transportation Branch, and Museum Support Services.  The employee performs repairs on motorized equipment, trailers and miscellaneous off-highway equipment belonging to the Smithsonian vehicle fleet.

    Responsibilities

    • Inspects, services and repairs motorized equipment, i.e., automobiles, tractor-trailers, coach buses, air-brake equipped vehicles, alternative fuel systems, hydraulic systems, automotive computerized systems, all electric and hybrid electric systems, and miscellaneous mobile equipment such as all-terrain vehicles, trailers, diesel and propane forklifts, aerial lifts, snow blowers, riding lawnmowers, sweepers and etc., belonging to the Smithsonian vehicle fleet.
    • Performs the full range of journeyman-level work which includes inspecting, servicing and repairing mobile equipment and automotive vehicles work includes major overhaul and repair of end items, major assemblies or components such as engines (gasoline, diesel, hybrid electric, or plug-in hybrid electric(PHEV)), transmissions (automatic, manual or transaxle cross drive), power train assemblies, suspensions, turbo chargers, brakes, steering and other components of engineering, mid-level construction and off-road class of mobile equipment such as all- terrain vehicles (ATVs), snow plows, snow blowers, generators, riding lawn mowers, salt spreaders, sweeper brooms, lift gates, electric winches, tracked-wheel/skid-steered equipment, and tracked loading equipment, cargo vehicles, trucks, buses, forklifts, and bulldozers or other equipment.
    • Performs complex diagnostic and repair procedures on all gas, natural & propane gas, hydraulic, electrical, and computerized and diesel mechanical systems in small or heavy vehicles and equipment.
    • Maintains vehicle records by recording services and repairs in the Fleet Management Information System (FMIS).
