    Summary

    This employee supports the USDA Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) Program, located at the Ogden Forestry Sciences Laboratory of the Rocky Mountain Research Station in Ogden, UT.

    The FIA program is charged with conducting a nationally-consistent, strategic annual forest inventory of the United States and its territories.

    Responsibilities

    • Provide consultation, staff coordination, and technical leadership in the area of regional multi-resource forest inventories and data collection.
    • Adjust or amend vegetation data collection plans or schedules to facilitate changing conditions and requirements.
    • Evaluate new techniques for forest inventory by reviewing information obtained from sources such as trade journals, meetings, or research results.
    • Provide technical assistance to states and other key clients on to the extent and condition of timber and non-timber attributes in a specific geographic region.
    • Work with researchers and analysts to determine best data collection methods for new studies or data variables.
    • Calculate and monitor cost of a natural resource inventory program based on staffing needs, equipment, supplies, materials and travel requirements.
    • Supervision comprises 25% or more of the employee's duties.

    Travel Required

    25% or less - Overnight may be expected 7-10 times per year to other Forest Service offices or field locations.
