    A Supervisory Mathematical Statistician vacancy is located in DOL, Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), Office of Compensation and Working Conditions (OCWC). Mathematical Statisticians at BLS are primarily responsible for assuring the statistical integrity of BLS surveys.

    Responsibilities

    The incumbent and the staff of professionals directed have primary responsibilities for the planning, development, direction, and evaluation of all statistical activities in the BLS compensation and occupational safety and health statistics programs. The incumbent determines the most efficient and effective possibilities for the application of mathematical statistical techniques in light of program reliability requirements and funding.

    The incumbent’s area of responsibility covers the broad spectrum of statistical activities: survey design planning and evaluation, sample selection, estimation procedures, estimation of sampling error/bias, statistical validation of survey results, and any other statistical issues. Included are those complex mathematical statistical problems involved in simulation, composite estimation, sample rotation, Monte Carlo techniques, statistical modeling, etc

    As division chief, the incumbent also provides guidance and review of statistical activities that are the responsibility of OCWC/BLS but are contracted to States or other agencies (e.g., the Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses, the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, and special surveys). The incumbent provides ancillary guidance in other ongoing BLS activities and programs as required.
