    GS-09 Salary: $56,167 (Step 01) to $73,013 (Step 10);

    GS-11 Salary: $67,956 (Step 01) to $88,348 (Step 10);

    Responsibilities

    As a Chemist within the Geology Geophysics & Geochemistry Science Center, some of your specific duties will include: 

    • Operations and preventative maintenance of a gas source, magnetic sector mass spectrometer and associated vacuum extraction system used for the measurement of noble gas isotopes in a variety of media.
    • The acquisition and quality control of all data generated on the laboratory instrumentation for projects within the Geology, Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center.
    • Transposing data from the laboratory Leger to complete calculations using various spreadsheet and statistical analysis programs to generate reliable data.
    • Training personnel when appropriate in the areas of: sample preparation, operation of instrumentation, computer operation, and electronics.
    • Following laboratory in order to obtain quality isotopic analyses and analytical data required by the Geology, Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center to fulfill its mission. 
    • Operating a government motor vehicle.

    Physical Demands:

    Laboratory work may require long periods of standing, the use of hazardous chemicals, manipulation of small objects requiring a high degree of manual dexterity, exposure to potentially dangerous chemicals, and instrumentation using high voltage. The laboratory can often be noisy and subject to extreme changes in temperature and humidity. Frequent lifting of equipment and objects weighing up to 40 pounds is necessary. Field work may involve walking over uneven terrain, dusty, hot, humid, and cold environments.

    Work Environment:

    The work involves regular and recurring exposure to irritant chemicals or cryogenic liquids which can result in moderate risks and discomfort. Special safety precautions such as safety glasses, dust or chemical masks or other appropriate personnel protective equipment must be used.
