    • The government-wide direct hire authority for Fish Biologist, GS-0482 is being used to fill this position.
    • Salary: $104,821 (Step 01) to $136,271 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

    This position is with the U.S. Geological Survey, Great Lakes Science Center located in Cortland, New York.  Specific duties will include: 

    --Developing, coordinating, leading, and supervising a broad and complex fisheries science program with special emphasis on innovative scientific efforts to support a relatively new cross-jurisdictional consensus to advance native fish restoration in the Great Lakes, specifically coregonines (ciscoes and lake whitefishes).

    --Managing the Eastern Branch of Native Fish Restoration; identifying broad research objectives and priorities for Branch's research program; supervising employees; ensuring delivery of required reports and products; optimizing productivity and allocation of resources; ensuring a balanced branch budget.

    --Providing leadership and guidance in research conducted within the Branch and Center. Leading staff in developing science frameworks and research initiatives on a large interdisciplinary scale to address ecosystem questions strongly focused on native species restoration, sustainable fisheries, decision analysis, adaptive management, threats assessment, population viability analysis, modelling, assessment and monitoring program development, and related sciences. 

    --Coordinating research activities with companion Branches in the Center, and with Federal, State and local agencies, tribal entities, and universities.  Leading science on a relatively new cross-jurisdictional native fish restoration initiative. 

    --Serving as a member of the Center's Policy Management Council (PMC), that provides advice and recommendations for the Center Director on all aspects of Center management, including policy formulation, research direction, budgeting, personnel and operations.

    Travel Required

    Occasional travel - 1 to 5 nights of travel per month may be required.
