This is a detail position not to exceed two years. After the end of this year assignment, incumbent will return to their former position of record. This position may be extended for an additional two years without further competition. Office of Chief Counsel GS-14 Attorneys within FIP only. Selectee(s) will be assigned to General Jurisdiction Branches 1, 2, or 3.
The Office of Associate Chief Counsel (Financial Institutions and Products) employs approximately 60 attorneys who work in Washington DC. Financial Institutions and Products attorneys provide legal advice and litigation support on tax matters involving financial institutions and the taxation of financial products. These financial institutions and products include banks, thrift institutions, insurance companies, regulated investment companies, real estate investment trusts, asset securitization arrangements, life insurance contracts, annuities, options, futures contracts, original issue discount obligations, hedging arrangements, and other types of innovative financial instruments and entities.
Duties within the General Jurisdiction Branches 1, 2, and 3 include developing and drafting Internal Revenue regulations, private letter rulings, revenue rulings, technical advice memoranda, consents to changes in methods of accounting, and other memoranda dealing with tax problems submitted by taxpayers and their representative, state and Federal agencies, and other Chief Counsel and IRS offices.
As the Assistant to the Branch Chief you will:
Candidates must have graduated from an ABA accredited law school and be admitted to practice law before the highest court of a state or territory of the United States; the District of Columbia; or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
