As an Statistician, GS-1530-12/13, your typical work assignments may include the following:
- The incumbent provides a variety of statistical techniques, applies complex statistical theory and techniques to support projects.
- The incumbent designs complex samples, survey instruments, and studies.
- Provides advice to other analysts and subject matter specialists on the formulation of statistical models relating the critical results to the observable of experiment.
- Solves complex problems that have been either generated or submitted for formulation, analysis or solution and integrates the mathematical and statistical aspects of machine computation.
- Conducts theoretical and experimental investigations to develop new or improve existing theories and techniques for the solution of problems which serve to expand the framework of knowledge.
- Exercises responsibility for planning, coordinating, and carrying out projects and is accountable for technical appropriateness, soundness, and interpretation of results.
- Coordinates with the client or other information source to resolve issues or discrepancies related to the input, assumptions and/or results of the proposed methodology.
- Performs the analyses, explaining the results and limitations to the client. Prepares documentation, and assists in the presentation and defense of results.
- Reviews the use of statistical/probability based methods and samples for appropriateness and defensibility.
- As directed by the Branch Chief or Technical Director performs special assignments, outside of normal duties, including the design, analysis and presentation of special studies.

QualificationsApplicants must demonstrate that they meet the Basic AND Minimum Qualification requirements as noted below.
A. Degree: that includes 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing.
B. Combination of education and experience - courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must meet the specialized experience described below.
Specialized Experience for GS-12: You must have at least 52 weeks of specialized experience at the GS-11 level in the federal service or at an equivalent level. The specialized experience is defined as applying knowledge of probability or sampling theory by designing simple random or complex stratified sample plans, drawing statistical samples and calculating statistical results.
