    The VA Maryland Health Care System (VAMHCS) is a Level I tertiary multi campus teaching facility affiliated with the University of Maryland, School of Medicine and over 100 educational institutions. The VAMHCS consists of the acute care Baltimore facility; the multi building Perry Point campus with acute medicine, mental health and long term care; the Loch Raven campus with long term care; and six urban and rural outpatient clinics.

    The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) works collaboratively with physicians, nursing staff, quality improvement, clinical review, residents and families, and community organizations to meet compliance and evaluate care for geriatric residents based on the standards set forth at the local, regional, and national level for CLCs. The CNS develops, reviews, and revises protocols, policies, procedures and processes specific to targeted standards. The CNS provides oversight and audits compliance with core program standards developed to meet quality for community living performance measures (e.g. Cultural Change) based upon evidence-based practice and VA Directives. The CNS leads survey teams, project work groups, and task forces as necessary to achieve program standards and requirements consistently.
    The incumbent coordinates all aspects of survey readiness within the Community Living Center, including the development, implementation, and monitoring of standard compliance. He/she provides developmental/educational opportunities for staff to acquire appropriate nursing and assessment skills, including technical expertise required for regulatory compliance. Additionally, he/she is responsible for training interdisciplinary staff regarding the restorative community living processes to ensure compliance with national and facility policies, protocols, and guidelines. He/she identifies problem areas for monitoring and evaluation, recommending practice changes based on survey findings and best practices.
