Operates gasoline and diesel powered road equipment required for construction, clearing, and/or rehabilitation of roadways. P. Road maintenance or construction projects consist of clearing rock excavation, shaping and crowning, mowing vegetation, and finish grading to within one-tenth foot of engineer's plans and specifications. Operates various heavy equipment including motor patrols, track dozer to 270 HP rating (D-8 size), tractors, front-end loaders to 4 cubic yards capacity, earth compactors (both sheep foot and pneumatic), dump truck, tractor trailer to 35-ton load capacity, and under various circumstances may operate other road construction equipment. Work also includes installation, repair or modification of cattle guards, concrete and CMP culverts, erection of wooden bridges, and construction of concrete abutments.
Performs snow removal on high mountain roadways which provide access to critical navigational facilities. Performs duties during severe weather, under extremely critical hazardous conditions. Operates large (19-ton, length-32', width-8'6", height -12) rotary snow removal equipment with dual diesel engines to 325 HP; various road patrols and tract equipment (to D-8 size) over narrow gravel or snow covered mountainous roads. Equipment, such as large patrols and rotary snow plows are equipped with both front and rear steering to negotiate turns and switchbacks on narrow mountainous roads. Due to visibility limitations of less than 100 feet, and to preclude rock falls or avalanches of snow, a high degree of operator skill is required.
Performs routine maintenance on all equipment such as motor oil changes, hose replacements, transmission oil changes, belt changes, and parts lubrication.
Responsible for placement and maintenance of snow marker poles and emergency equipment, piles, clothing, and avalanche supplies.
Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
FW-10: Works under close supervision of the Facility Maintenance Supervisor or Road Crew Foreman who assigns itineraries and makes overall work assignments with periodic instructions as deemed necessary. Work is reviewed on a continuing basis. Task such as snow removal on high mountain access roads is performed under direct supervision. Completed work is reviewed by FMP Supervisor or Road Crew Foreman to assure satisfactory completion and compliance with instructions and safety regulations.
FW-11: Works under the general supervision of the Facility Maintenance Supervisor or Road Crew Foreman who assigns itineraries and makes overall work assignments with periodic instructions as deemed necessary. Most work, such as snow removal on high, mountain access roads, is performed without direct supervision. Completed work is occasionally reviewed to assure satisfactory completion and compliance with instructions and safety regulations.
To qualify, no specific length of experience or training is required, however, you must show evidence of experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of this position.

Physical Effort: The position requires strenuous manual labor. Heavy physical effort is used by the operator in constantly reaching, bending, turning and moving hands, arms, feet and legs to handle different sets of controls to operate the equipment and attachments. The operators are frequently required to work in awkward or strained positions.
Working Conditions: The majority of work is accomplished at isolated locations and mountainous country during all seasons of the year. Working condition elevations range from sea level to an elevation of 12,000 feet. Temperatures range from 120 degrees to -30 degrees Fahrenheit, and work is performed in all types of weather without shelter. Winter months involve snow control operations in hazardous terrain to provide access to remote facilities. The remainder of the year entails rebuilding and maintaining access roads whereby the operators are subjected to noise, dust, dirt, rough riding, exhaust fumes and potential rock or snow slides. The operator is exposed to injury due to steep slopes and narrow unimproved, mountainous secondary roads. Position requires up to 90 per cent travel. A high-altitude physical condition is required.
