The incumbent serves as the Deputy Director of the Integrated Modeling and Prediction Division (IMPD) in the USGS Water Mission Area's (WMA) Office of the Chief Operating Officer (OCOO). The IMPD provides a single focal point for integrated, interdisciplinary water modeling and prediction activities of the WMA. IMPD modeling and prediction activities are comprehensive, encompassing all aspects of the water cycle, and provide water managers with information to address a wide range of water quantity, quality, security, and hazard issues facing the Nation. The IMPD Deputy Director assists in providing leadership to (1) ensure that activities carried out within the IMPD are consistent with overarching WMA strategies and priorities, coordinated, well-integrated and adhere to established standards and practices; (2) develop and integrate Earth System modeling and prediction capabilities for use within the WMA and the Bureau, and in support of interagency collaborative goals.

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-15 level:
One year of professional geographer experience that is equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal service.
Examples of such experience may include: 1) initiating, formulating, planning, and controlling of major research projects or geographical programs critical to the organization; 2) developing and testing hypotheses to clarify complex and often obscure causal relationships; 3) examining geographic processes to understand their nature and assess their impact upon organizational programs; 4) conducting analytic and comparative studies that define geographic areas throughout the nation.
For examples 1-4, assignments were given in terms of general objectives; the work often involved research and investigations of a subject in which little work had been done; the geographer's decisions were authoritative; and he/she was recognized as the organization's expert in their field.

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in hydrology that is equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal service.
Examples of such experience could include serving as a senior expert involved in hydrologic work for which technical problem definitions, methods and/or data were highly incomplete, controversial, or uncertain and whose evaluations and recommendations were accepted by others as those of a technical expert in hydrology. At this level, Hydrologists typically represent an authoritative source of consultation for other scientists and program specialists, are called upon to resolve issues that significantly affect hydrologic programs, make long range and controversial proposals and defend their findings and recommendations in public or high level forums.
