    What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

    This is an interdisciplinary position. 

    The duty station of this position may remain that of the selectee or may be any USGS location that is agreed upon by the selecting official and the selectee.  If the agreed upon location results in the relocation of the selectee, the travel, transportation, and relocation expenses are not authorized.

    The incumbent serves as the Deputy Director of the Integrated Modeling and Prediction Division (IMPD) in the USGS Water Mission Area's (WMA) Office of the Chief Operating Officer (OCOO). The IMPD provides a single focal point for integrated, interdisciplinary water modeling and prediction activities of the WMA. IMPD modeling and prediction activities are comprehensive, encompassing all aspects of the water cycle, and provide water managers with information to address a wide range of water quantity, quality, security, and hazard issues facing the Nation. The IMPD Deputy Director assists in providing leadership to (1) ensure that activities carried out within the IMPD are consistent with overarching WMA strategies and priorities, coordinated, well-integrated and adhere to established standards and practices; (2) develop and integrate Earth System modeling and prediction capabilities for use within the WMA and the Bureau, and in support of interagency collaborative goals.

    Some of your specific duties will include: 

    • Serves as a manager in the IMPD and assists the IMPD Director in providing oversight and leadership of scientific, technical and administrative direction, guidance and policy development to ensure the continued excellence of the IMPD.
    • Assists in formulating IMPD policies that support the needs of the WMA, Bureau and other Federal, State, Tribal, and local agencies for research and development of new and advanced types of modeling systems, services, analytical products, data and quality assurance/control practices.
    • Assists in defining the management and operational needs of WMA enterprise modeling systems and works to assure funding for those activities within the WMA and Bureau.
    • Assists in ensuring excellence in strategic and operational management of the IMPD workforce. Carries out supervisory/managerial duties effectively in order to support the Department of Interior and Bureau's capacity to manage its programs in a results- oriented, customer-focused and efficient manner.

    Travel Required

    25% or less - An average of 5 nights per month
