Summary
The mission of the Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Center is to serve the public through research to determine nutritional needs for humans and research to provide information concerning healthy food and physical activity choices and a healthful food supply. The Center focuses on health roles of foods and food factors and on foods, physical activity and other lifestyle factors relevant to obesity prevention and maintenance of healthy body weight.

Responsibilities
- Leads a team of scientists that studies, expands and complements an existing research program regarding the study of epigenetic mechanisms and the behavioral factors important for healthy habit formation and achieving a healthy body weight.
- Conceives, leads and implements both independent research and multidisciplinary, team-based research (basic, clinical and/or translational) and analyzes experimental data, provides oversight of one or more Center research cores.
- As Research Leader, provides pre-submission review of reports (abstracts, original manuscripts, book reviews/chapters, and letters to the editor) produced by scientists assigned to the research management unit.
- Prepares written work products (peer reviewed papers, chapters, review papers) based on research to be published in professional articles, publications, and technical abstracts.
- Submits at least two manuscripts per year for publication of experimental results in peer-reviewed journals and presents information at scientific meetings and at other research institutions.
- Manages a research program, including personnel, equipment and fiscal resources following agency's mission and scientific procedures, requirements, policies and protocols.
- Supervises employees, to include setting performance standards, monitoring performance and guiding subordinates.

Qualifications
This is an interdisciplinary position and may be filled in any of the job series/position titles listed below in the Education section. In addition to the specialized experience requirements, applicants must submit proof that they meet the educational requirements for at least one of the series described in the announcement. Applicants may only be appointed to job series/position titles for which they meet all experience and educational requirements. Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
GS-14: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-14 level of this position are:- Planning and conducting independent research related to 1) the study of epigenetic mechanisms that influence the risk of obesity via alterations in physiology and/or behavior or 2) the behavioral factors important for healthy habit formation and achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight.
- Managing personnel, materials, equipment, resources, and facilities needed to accomplish research goals;
- Presenting research results related to the study of epigenetic mechanisms that influence the risk of obesity via alterations in physiology and/or behavior or 2) the behavioral factors important for healthy habit formation and achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight to professional societies and others outside of the organization.
- Publishing independent research results related to the study of epigenetic mechanisms that influence the risk of obesity via alterations in physiology and/or behavior or 2) the behavioral factors important for healthy habit formation and achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
- Minimum of two years of postdoctoral research experience is required.

In addition to meeting the specialized experience as outlined above, applicants must also meet the minimum education required and defined by the OPM qualification standard as outlined below:
Nutrition (0630); Degree: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in the fields of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science OR Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by AND (formerly ADA) for dietitians or nutritionists OR Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).
Genetics (0440);Degree: or one of the basic biological sciences that included at least 9 semester hours in genetics. Courses dealing with genetics, some phase of genetics, or specific techniques that are applied in genetics work are acceptable. This includes courses in genetics, plant or animal genetics, molecular and cellular biology, mathematics and statistics (as they apply to genetics), population dynamics, and certain techniques such as those dealing with irradiation.
Physiology (0413); Degree: in one of the basic animal sciences or physiology; or a related discipline or field of science that included at least 24 semester hours in the basic animal sciences, of which 10 semester hours were in animal physiology.
Psychology (0180); Degree: major or equivalent in psychology for all specializations except clinical psychology and counseling psychology. These two specializations have additional educational requirements, as stated below: Clinical psychology: For positions at grades GS-11 and above, satisfactory completion of all the requirements for the doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) directly related to full professional work in clinical psychology is required. Counseling psychology: For positions at grades GS-9 and above, satisfactory completion of 2 full academic years of graduate study directly related to professional work in counseling psychology, or satisfactory completion in an accredited educational institution of all the requirements for a master's degree directly related to counseling psychology is required.

This position requires the selectee to undergo a pre-employment check and a full background investigation.
