Operates diesel and gasoline powered road construction equipment required for construction, cleaning or rehabilitation of roadways. Such road maintenance or construction projects consist of clearing rock excavation, blasting, shaping, and crowning and finish grading to within one tenth foot of engineering plans and specifications. Work also includes installation, repair or modification of cattle guards, concrete and CMP culverts, erection of wooden bridges and construction of concrete abutments. Operates various heavy equipment including motor patrols, track dozer to 270 HP ratings, tractors, front-end loaders to 4 cubic yards capacity, earth compactors, both sheep front and pneumatic, dump truck, tractor trailers to 35-ton load capacity and under various circumstances may operate other road construction equipment.
Performs snow removal on high mountain roadways which provide access to critical navigation facilities. Performs duties during severe weather, under extremely hazardous conditions. Operates large (19-ton, length-32', width-8'6", height-12') rotary snow removal equipment with dual diesel engines to 325 horsepower; various road patrols and track equipment (to size D-8) over narrow gravel or snow covered mountainous roads. Equipment, such as large patrol and rotary snow plows are equipped with both front and rear steering to negotiate turns and switch backs on narrow mountainous roads. Due to visibility limitations of less than 100 feet and to preclude road falls or avalanches of snow, a high degree of operator skill is required. Uses explosives in control of snow avalanches and maintains proficiency in snow rescue techniques.
Maintains, repairs, overhauls and rebuilds the heavy off-road and special purpose equipment used in snow removal.
Follows general instructions of the FMP Manager/Assistant Manager/Coordinator or applies standard practices of the trade and procedures prescribed for the project. Responsible for planning material needs. Sets pace for the group and assigns personnel based on ability in organized teams or small crews.
Recommends action for the development of worker skills. Instructs and trains crew members in what and how work is to be done and works along with them demonstrating proper procedures and the time requirement for job completion.
Makes informal appraisals of crew performance and suggests methods of improving procedures for achievement of greater efficiency and economy. Assures adherence to the rules and regulations concerning conduct, safety, fire, care of equipment and housekeeping. Identifies needs and suggests personnel actions.
Refers requests for leave and personnel problems to the FMP Manager/Assistant Manager.
Checks completed jobs for conformance with standards of quality and compliance with instructions, corrects any deficiencies before leaving work site.
Keeps FMP Manager/Assistant Manager/Coordinator informed of work progress and submits required reports.
Performs other duties as assigned.
