WHAT DOES A TAX LAW SPECIALIST DO? The IRS employs Tax Law Specialists (TLS) in many areas throughout the Service. In the TE/GE function, a TLS interprets the tax code, regulations, administrative guidance and court cases. They provide authoritative technical tax advice and education through outreach to tax exempt organizations and employee plans.
WHAT IS THE TAX EXEMPT AND GOVERNMENT ENTITIES DIVISION? The Tax Exempt and Government Entities (TE/GE) Division serves three distinct groups of customers. Employee Plans (EP) examines the returns of qualified pension benefit plans to determine if they're in compliance. Exempt Organizations (EO) determines if not-for-profit organizations meet their tax-exempt status requirements. Government Entities (GE) ensures these organizations meet their tax withholding and employment tax payment requirements as well as requirements relating to tax-exempt and tax credit bond transactions.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
GS-13 LEVEL: You must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience that included legal, tax accounting, or other experience that required knowledge of Federal tax laws, regulations, precedent decisions, or other areas related to the position to be filled. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:
- Preparing, reviewing, or applying rulings, advisory letters, memoranda, etc. related to Federal taxation.
- Analyzing and adjudicating tax claims, appeals, settlement offers, or similar work related to Federal tax operations.
- Work as an attorney that required legal research, analysis, and preparation of briefs or similar documents interpreting laws and regulations.
- Work as an accountant, auditor, or investigator that required application of Federal tax accounting principles and/or the Internal Revenue Code and related laws.
- The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector or Volunteer Service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-timework is considered on a prorated basis.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
