    This position is located in the Department Of Commerce, National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, National Marine Fisheries Service, Southwest Fisheries Science Center, Antarctic Ecosystem Research Division, with two vacancies in San Diego, CA.

    Responsibilities

    As a Biological Science Aid in the Antarctic Ecosystem Research Division, you will perform the following duties:

    • Support research goals associated with the ecosystem based management of fisheries that impact krill, finfishes, krill-dependent predators and other components of the Antarctic ecosystem.
    • Collect and analyze standard data related to reproduction, foraging ecology, growth, abundance, distribution, survival and diet.
    • Support pre-season logistics and logistical operations during port calls, including transporting equipment, supplies and personnel.
    • Operate, maintain and service small boats and Unmanned Aerial Systems in support of oceanographic programs.

    The incumbent is required to deploy to Antarctica for up to three consecutive months annually from approximately December through mid-April. 

    When deployed to Antarctica the incumbent will live in a remote field camp where conditions are primitive and outside communications are limited. The incumbent will support oceanographic, pinniped, and seabird research programs including assisting with collecting, cataloging, and analyzing ecological data. These tasks and others related to  camp maintenance are required for successful performance of duties. In this role, the incumbent works with on-site NOAA scientists and NOAA Corp Officers.
